If so, what are your living circumstances?
Also, what symptoms to you generally have that qualify you for disability?
I have SSI and SSDI, I also have Medicare/Medicaid and food stamps. I live in federal housing and have a car, although I rarely drive it. I feel my situation is pretty good as long as I can maintain.
Yes- I’m on disability and live on my own. I get a fair amount of support. Without that support, when living in Essex, I was basically self neglecting . Though it took moving here to realise that .
im on disability and kinda live independently. well right now i live in a 2bdrm 2bath trailer that mom and dad own, their guest house kinda. i pay them $600 dollars a month in rent. and then have $400 dollars for food and books etc. my rent money my dad invests for me, he’s not the richest guy in the world but he has done well, makes about 6 figures in investments each year, on a typical year. anyways i have to make a decision on wether or not i will buy my current place or buy a condo somewhere else. if i choose to move dad has agreed to allow me my rent money back for a downpayment on a house somewhere else.
the plan is to go back to work though, as i want more money than i currently receive, i may start out part time and stay under SGA. but eventually i would like to go back to work full time.
my symptoms are mostly negatives now. like flat effect, and lack of motivation. but i also sometimes hear voices, but since getting on my new med, i rarely ever hear voices anymore. i almost feel cured, so am thinking its about time to get back to work. im somewhat functioning. i worked before my onset so work is nothing new to me. i just wake up, eat, go to work, come home and watch a ballgame on tv. and that’s my life when im working.
I’m on Disability and live independently in my own apartment. I don’t know what symptoms qualified me for Disability. A lawyer handled it when I was in the hospital’s psych ward.
I’m on disability and don’t live independently, only good thing is I don’t have a hard time being awarded benefits… I do tend to do a bit off travelling, Only been to Whitby in Yorkshire this year before lockdown. I do travel independently. My appointee who manages my finances puts money into my account Monday, Wednesday, Friday in a staggered effect so I don’t run out of money.
I’m on disability and rent my own apartment. The only reason this is possible is because my rent is incredibly cheap (My apartment is in horrible shape and situated near a train track) and my landlord pays my water bill. I have no money after rent and bills and can only eat because of EBT.
I do think British disability benefits are very generous. I get all my rent paid, council tax, I live in a large townhouse built in the 1890s with 3 other people with disabilities. I have a large bedroom, all the appliances in shared areas in house are replaced by care company when they break… I receive £1.300 a month in benefits, I can very easily save £1000 a month after my food shopping ($1226.02) I do really feel very fortunate to be British.
I wonder how things will change when we will all go on universal credit. I’m a bit concerned about that.
I’m not concerned about universal credit. I do think they’ll be safeguards for people with severe disabilities.
Yeah, I’m living alone on SSDI …
Here is how you survive it and keep yet boat afloat:
Shop at Dollar tree
Shop at thrift stores
Buy a TV antenna from RadioShack and get free channels
Get on food stamps — I get 190 a month
My apartment is $600 per month, I make $800 – so use the rest on house hold objects, like shampoo n stuff, I recommend a quarter jar for bus fare …
I had to go on UC when I moved to Wiltshire. Luckily I had savings to help me bridge the then 6 week gap. Others aren’t so fortunate .
yeah, i am totally independent now, i have no support from mental health services anymore as i was discharged recently, living on my own since 2013, its been ok but at my worst i couldn’t cope, my ex gf helped me through the worst of my illness before i got my own place and i’m grateful for that. my hardships these days are cooking, cleaning and shopping, and i get enough to live on.
If you don’t mind me asking do you get the same amount of financial support as on the old benefits system.
Since they restored the disability premium they’d taken away when people went on UC , plus back pay, I think there’s no difference now as to amount . You get paid monthly . A sum is given for rent which you have to make sure goes to your private landlord/council/housing association .
