Anyone switched from olanzapine to risperidone?

Hi. My psychiatrist consider switching me from olanzapine to risperidone. Have you tried that kind of switch and how was it?

I’m a little worried because olanzapine should be superior to risperidone.

A psych doc told me risperidone gives you man boobs after prolonged use … nothing to worry about if your a women.

Unfortunately im a man, yes, i have read the same. I dont want to have a titjob done by antipsychotics :smiley:

Ive done this and the risperidone wasnt effective for me so i started becoming unwell and went back on olanzapine. Thats not to say it wont work for you though.

Thanks, i need as many experiences as possible. Maybe its better for me to increase my dose of olanzapine

I dont know, that might be worth discussing with your pdoc. I think the meds affect everyone differently and the only way to know for sure is to try it.

Im on olanzapine and risperdal consta.
Both have been effective for me.

Yeah, @fingolfin and @Umbrella - i have an appointment thursday with my pdoc about swiching or having both at the same time

You will get the hunger pangs and the weight gain if you increase the dose. It’s harder on lower dose but more beneficial health wise.

Risperidone gave me treatment resistant insomnia that hasn’t yet improved after switching AP’s.

A long time ago, I did, and it was less sedative for me back then. I’m currently on abilify though.

I switched from Zyprexa to Risperdal cause Zyprexa was giving me serious weight gain

Then risperidone killed sex drive, and made me impotent so I changed again to the med I’m on now, Clozaril

Just keep some Clozapine because that’s the one go to for treatment resistant symptoms.

I was at my psychiatrist earlier and we decided to increase dose of olanzapine to 15 mg instead of risperidone. Olanzapine is supposed to be more effective than other meds (apart from clozapine)

Im a rapid metabolizer of olanzapine so i need a much higher dose than others.

I was on 20 mg Olanzapine in 2016. Eventually the dosage went down to about 2 mg.
Olanzapine was horrible for me.

These days I take 4,5 mg Risperidone, 2 in the morning, two and a half in the evening.

Risperidone is a lot better for me but it will kill your sex drive, keep that in mind.

I‘m a man and I didn‘t get man boobs and fortunately the weight gain was also very mild. But I heard that the weight gain is more intense for women.

Thanks a lot for your informative answer. If olanzapine 15 mg does not work for me, i will not hesitate to try risperidone. Glad it improved your life. I am 55 and i don’t know if my erotic, romantic life is over, so i guess i could live with the sexual sideeffects
