I’m wondering is there any form or fashion that I can join the armed forces. Obviously I can’t do combat or hold a gun, but is there any way a SzA can join the army.
In boot camp you train with guns and grenades. I don’t think they allow the mentally ill to join. I’m not sure though.
I doubt if you can do that if they know you’re sz. When I was in the army a guy had joined with bad knees, and he wanted out because of his disability. They were a little testy about it.
I wish I could join the military as a nurse and help people out but I am currently on meds and have a seizure disorder so I can’t join.
I read an article recently where people who were bi-polar could join the Army with a medical waiver. Not sure about schizophrenia though.
Hey @TheBest! Where’s far cry been? It’s like he fell off the face of the earth
I’m not sure where he has been.
You can’t be a nurse? It’s not like you would be in combat?
One other post I saw said he spending his time watching YouTube videos.
Do you mean I can be a nurse?
After the guy who was in Air Force shot up the church the Army started to allow mentally ill people. They must have figured out the training or something. You don’t want to be mentally ill in the Army after what that guy did.
No idont understand why you can’t work as a nurse in the military if you are not going to be in combat?
Ill look it up. Thanks @anon12381882
If you have sz or sza you can’t join I got sick on active duty and I actually did my last 4 years schizophrenic. That’s a very rare occurrence. I was almost to my 20 year retirement mark when my medical board came back unfit for duty.
Oh that is an awful time to get it, so sorry to hear that.
I’m not gonna claim I know the answer. But just using common sense here. I think being in a war can make mental illness symptoms worse even if stable on medication. Also a lot of people in wars come down with mental illness afterwards. I think they say about 20 percent have pts.

They let me do my full 20 years to retire but I wanted a regular retirement and they gave me a medical retirement so I can’t be called back.
I am on the permanent disability retirement list. The Department of Defense says I am 70% disabled but the VA says I am 100% disabled.
Because I did 20 years I get my full retirement check plus a VA disability check. I get them both now plus SSDI. So I get 3 retirement checks. If they wouldn’t have let me finish my 20 years I would only get the VA check. I am glad for it now. That wasn’t my goal though.
At the time I never imagined that I wouldn’t be able to work anymore.
Good for you. 144055555555
