I’m wondering if anyone has enlisted, and if so what were your symptoms like during your deployment? Ik the US Army doesn’t allow schizo’s or schizoaffectives to serve, but I also know a lot of people with mental health issues get in based on “don’t ask don’t tell”. Active deployment has been a goal of mine since I was a kid, and I don’t want to let a recent diagnosis get in the way of me actually going out there.
Don’t ask don’t tell is/was for gay people. I wouldn’t want someone with a machine gun hallucinating on the battlefield. I don’t believe don’t ask don’t tell is applicable for schizophrenia, only homosexuality. Well that’s how it should be, not saying it’s how it is. It’s just my opinion.
You are not going to be able to join. If you lie to them and it shows up later you will be sent to the brig.
You can serve if you’re gay, and it’s been found that people with disqualifying mental health conditions are enlisting. If my symptoms were bad I would not be considering enlisting, and if they do get bad I could go to a CO and most likely get medically discharged
Unless I have some kind of record and it shows I’m schizoaffective (I don’t), if I go and my symptoms get bad I’ll get medically discharged
You better not lie and put other soldiers in jeopardy. This is going to end really, really bad for you.
I guess I should have added that my symptoms have never gotten too bad, I haven’t taken or been prescribed any medication thus far and if I felt at any time I was putting myself or others at risk I wouldn’t hesitate to go to a CO for a medical discharge
You are over indulgent. Where a schizophrenic can go if he don’t ask and don’t tell.
We saw what happened in Texas. This is a touchy subject right now op… plus why would you wanna enhance your MI with ptsd if you have schizoaffective like you say. That’s always been my thoughts. You don’t want ptsd it’s no fun especially to go along with sza.
what was the verdict what was he suffering from?
or just batshit crazzy?
@Wave mentioned he was a psychopath, but I still think it illustrates the effects that military can have on an ill mind
what happened in texas?
A guy who was previously in the military, he broke the Skull of his baby, he had a history of being in psych wards, he murdered 26 people at a church. can’t believe you didn’t hear! I guess it’s a common nowadays it blends in with all the other news
wtf i thoght u were talking about the guy that shot into the crowd…
Thats news to me this a new attack weow
that’s awful, I missed it bc I pretty much don’t watch news anymore, it’s triggering and there’s nothing I can do to help this world except to take care of myself and my loved ones and tend to our mental health so we don’t end up shooting a bunch of people.
terrible what trump says…
Yeah man, check my response to your other thread about my book, I edited my book in relevance to trumps comments, I was really affected by them that pissed me off. So I made my book relevant to those comments
I did military service, but my strategy is to only look forward.
I was a U.S. Navy Intelligence Specialist for 3 years (1982-1985). I was honorably discharged under medical conditions (schizophrenia (I became delusional)).
As @Jonnybegood said, ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ was a military policy from 1994-2011 that only applied to gay people.
So you’re interested in infantry or Spec Ops/Forces? Okay, check out YouTube helmet cam videos of firefights in Afghanistan to make sure it’s for you.
I wish you the best.
I was confused a lot and I drank a lot while I was in the army. I spent two years in Germany. I was intoxicated by the beauty of Germany the whole time I was there. I probably would have had a better time if I hadn’t been trying to drink all the beer in Germany. I was in from 77 to 81. It was a different army back then. I was a nuclear, biological, and chemical specialist while I was at Fort Hood, TX. That would have been a good field to move up in if I had stayed in.
