Just wanted to know of any of you guys ever had electro shock therapy (ect ) and if so how was your experience with it? I might be looking in to it so just wanted to know what it’s like.
thought i would say hi
i would also be interested in peoples comments…nice post @Jenn77
i will try anything.
take care
Hey back!
I’m pretty desperate at this point, I just need something to help and ect could possibly be the answer.
ECT is typically more effective for depression from what I’ve heard on here…
The more expensive rTMS (repetitive trans-cranial magnetic stimulation) is less invasive and more effective at sort of encouraging the brain to be rewired quickly… you are awake through out the process… it’s not an induced seizure… unfortunately it costs 10k… and it’s not FDA approved so insurance is a long way from helping out…
They burn up a 200$ bulb each session… and you gotta go in at the same time for weeks…
This is likely going to be a big technique in the future… but for now its infantile…
@SunGirl is probably the most outspoken about having success with ECT… perhaps she’ll chime in now that she is mentioned.
There are some states with enough clientele that the docs don’t have to charge as much just to pay off the machines (100k) for rTMS… if you live on the coasts you might be in luck…
Stick around @Jenn77… welcome to the forum.
I think I once saw a poster on the treatment of sz resistant to meds. It was kinda like an algorithm. I think it said if all else fails try ect along with whatever med worked best.
As a patient on the ward I saw a few really depressed folk who benefitted hugely from ect. It honestly was like a miracle treatment. Don’t know about sz but ect seems to help some people.
Yes I heard of the tms and would have tried it if I could. I’m willing to try the ect if it can possibly help with the depression. The meds just aren’t doing it for me anymore, and the delusions and voices are just not going away.
I’m glad I found this site, thank you
Hey! I’m new-ish to the site here and see you are new also. Welcome, mate!
Hey! Welcome to you too!! Didn’t know these forums exsisted until today haha
Hey,
I don’t want to get your hopes down…but I was searching for a way to solve depression and psychosis too, without medication and have been reading a bit about it. I would be really careful.
I f.e. read this article (which is from a site that is very very critical of psychiatry!). But they show that many studies on ECT have no follow-up and no control for adverse effects. And they say the effects on depression can possibly be temporary due to post-concussion euphoria. No idea if this is true. But wanted to warn you.
There are people pro and con ECT and I don’t really know who to believe…
Yeah! This a great resource for all of us to learn and even socialize. I hope to see you around!
I had ect back in the 60’s and 70’s. The doctor was very pleased with the results. I seem to have suffered no ill effects.

Like @Azley said I’ve had ECT. I had tried almost every atypical AP there was and I was still suffering with psychosis 24/7. My pdoc recommended ECT so I decided to give it a try. I had to stay in the psych ward for a month for the initial treatments. I then went home and continued to receive treatments every 1-4 weeks, depending on my symptoms, for the next three years. It worked wonders for me. Not only did my symptoms stop but I became more responsive to meds. My last treatment was in December 2014, since then I’ve just been on meds. They needed to be tweaked a little but I have virtually no positive symptoms. Good luck with whatever you try. Feel free to ask me any questions.
That sounds interesting! Good that it worked for you!
