An unimportant rant about getting old and losing skills to understand new technology

All of a sudden i can’t cast the signal from my smartphone to my TV.

I don’t understand my smartphone .

I don’t understand my remote control to my tv either, so i can’t fix it.

I don’t understand my new laptop, it is constantly asking me questions I don’t understand.

When you get old you lose the ability to navigate in a more and more complex world, and the older I get, the more complex technology.

I will end up completely estranged from a world I don’t understand.

You and the rest of the ‘maturer’ population! Don’t worry about understanding it and don’t even worry about using it - just get someone else to help you or manage without it - it is not crucial but it can be very frustrating if you feel stuck…

Thanks, but i hate to seek help to understand something that’s probably easy
On the other hand, you have to accept seeking help is part of being old.

I fit into this category as well. It stresses me out terribly - the feeling of being left behind.

I have to show my teen how tech works, actually. Age doesn’t mean you can’t understand tech so long as you put in the effort.

Yes, and it’s not fear of missing out.

Whenever you get a new smartphone og laptop there are all these things and options I don’t need.

I just want to surf, make phone calls and text messages and perhaps mobile pay and a few other things. .

No. Not necessarily so. My father taught me a lot about technology. He was smarter than me at that point. But some people just lack the ability and for those people it gets worse when you age

I spent years using Windows 7 because I’d heard that Windows 8 was radically different from it. I had zero belief I could adjust to it. Then my Windows 7 laptop started going wonky. By then Windows 10 was out. I was very anxious but upgraded to it. There were a few hiccups, but nothing like as bad as I was expecting. I have very little faith in my ability. A simple example, I did a test someone had made. I went into ‘S*** you’re f*****g stupid’ mode over how I’d done. A few days later someone a little more intelligent than me posted the same score. Today someone I rank significantly more intelligent than me posted his score. He’d only got 1 more right than me.

Certain things though like ‘touch and swipe’(or whatever it’s called)smartphones are too sensitive for a heavy handed person like me. It has nothing to do with being stupid. I was given one of my grandchildren’s phones to use for a while, and really struggled. I now have a ‘no bells and whistles’ phone for the elderly with large letters etc.

I mostly try and follow somewhat so I don’t fall too far behind. The only area where I’ve really let myself go is hardware. I’m not too concerned with keeping on top of new stuff as it’s so overpriced. I tend to salvage hardware from the recycle center and research what I need to in order to get it going if I see a slot or socket I don’t recognize. It’s not exactly rocket science. The specifics change, but the underlying principles remain constant.

Some stuff is just a black box that you just use and trust.

For everything else there’s YouTube tutorials :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Most tutorials should not be YouTube videos. It’s inefficient. I think people just do it to make money or get subscribers. It annoys me. A short text explanation is enough for most purposes.

It depends on how people learn.
I learn better from watching a video and performing the task alongside - text instructions or purely verbal instructions confuse me

I dislike Youtube tutorials. It forces me to lower my input speed to others’ output speed, which is agonizingly slow.

Yeah, that’s how I feel about video tutorials. It would be nice if they included a description of the steps so I could skip the dumb and long-winded parts of their explanations. Which is always most of the video. Also going back or forward to a specific point in a video is not as easy as scrolling a text.

Oh yeah I more meant “online tutorial of your choice” whichever online source you want you can find to show you what to do

I fixed the problem, I whined for no reason.

I still got the feeling of living in a more and more complex world but other people are far more lost than me.

I use youtube tutorials very often, but mostly for DIY tasks.

I really enjoy exploring the new things that come out. It’s a wonderful time to be alive and to get to play with all of this new stuff that was strictly the province of sci-fi when I was a child.

I prefer text that I can look at as many times as I need to than spoken/visual instructions.
