All those years of smoking took a toll

In college I used to work in the dining hall and I really loved it. Just setting up places, serving, and tearing down. Now, I huff and puff to empty the dishwasher, my kitchen chore, and I wonder why it isn’t the same good time. Never smoke, kids.

How long did you smoke chordy? At what age did you stop?

I smoked for over 50 years. I was 71 when I quit.

I was just curious because I know that I need to quit sometime myself. I have smoked for over 30 years. I am 48.

Well, the sooner the better. If there’s anything I can do to help you stop, let me know. I know some quit cold turkey but I found it easier on my system to quit gradually in steps. (I quit in October. I didn’t like the idea of quitting eating cold turkey especially with Thanksgiving coming up. The use of words blew my mind.). Now’s a good time to stop.

It’s worth it. For the first few YEARS after I quit, I wanted to smoke EVERY DAY. But that is completely gone now. (I’ve been quit over 8 years.)

I did it by switching back and forth between cigarettes and an ecig. Then I picked a date, and went off the cigs and stayed just on ecigs. Every couple of months I would drop down to the next lower nicotine percentage ecig, until I finally got to zero. Took me 10 months, but I didn’t have to give up the hand to mouth thing, or cold turkey the nicotine. Don’t know if that’s helpful.

Thanks! @TheCanuk I started smoking when I was 14 :flushed: in 1987, and I didn’t quit until I was 40 in 2013. I’ve had my lungs scanned, and they said my lungs look “pristine” – which was amazing to hear!

I did quit for about a year or more when I was psychotic I should note. But I had the delusions about it being “against God” and about cigarettes being poisoned that gave me delusional motivation. I started back up after psychosis when moving in with my parents. My mom smokes so it made it extremely difficult not to start up again.

That is really hard, to live with a smoker and not smoke.

Do you live with your parents now?

Could you interest your mom into quitting with you? Our whole house quit.

Yeah, I’m not sure that she is interested in quitting. She has a fit when we run out of cigarettes. IDK. I do buy them though, but she would probably just end up buying her own.
