Again mania or?

Hi everyone. I’m having some issues lately. I’ve been diagnosed with SZA disorder since 3 yrs now. Everything has been going in the right direction with all the meds and support I’m getting, until recently. Two weeks ago I stopped sleeping completely. Lots of energy and thoughts about cleaning and rearranging the house during the night! During the day my energy levels are minimal but when the dark comes, here’s where it all starts. No matter what I do I just cannot fall asleep, even sleeping pills don’t work. I had to take tavor last night to finally get some sleep. What’s interesting is that in the morning I don’t feel worn out, everything is normal, I can take care of the child, cook, clean etc. function normally. My doctor told me this could be an onset of mania. I used to have it before, same sleep disturbance, same energy rush. Ah and I forgot the optimism. I\m not an optimistic person, always anxious something can go wrong, however I’ve been an optimist these days.
I would appreciate it if you guys could share your experience on this topic.

I’m not SZA and don’t have a mood disorder but just wanted to welcome you to the forum.

Did you change anything to do with your meds recently?

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like mania to me. You are in a dangerous position. You need to take it very seriously and get to your pdoc as soon as possible. Take extra care of yourself. Watch your impulses (spending, driving, sex, etc.), get as much sleep as you can even though it’s hard.

Thanks for your reply. My doc told me today to increase some of the meds and get to the hospital if possible to get some professional help there. Though I’m not sure I want to go to the hospital this with all the corona story, plus I’m being able to control my impulses so far. Hopefully it will stay this way. If not, then hospital it is.

Thanks. My Abilify went down from 10 to 5 mg as I’m experiencing much less delusions. My lithium went up from 900 to 1350 mg. And quetiapin was cancelled but this was a super low dosage of 25 mg so doesn’t count I guess. But what’s strange the meds were changed about two months ago and sleep worsened 2 weeks ago or so.

5mg of abilify is only used as an addon to an antidepressant for depression. Once the dose of abilify drops below 10mg it no longer acts as an antipsychotic.

If it were me and things were going great for 3 years I’d blame that.

From google :

Aripiprazole can be effective in treating the acute manic episodes of bipolar disorder in adults, adolescents and children. However, its effect is only useful for the manic phases with little or no effect on the depressive phases. For this reason, aripiprazole is often used in conjunction with mood stabilizers .

So it’s a bit of a coincidence that you’re becoming manic after dropping the dose of abilify.

I guess you are right. Hopefully things will get better with 10 mg.
