Advice from lawyer

Since I failed my first disability application my mom went to meet with her lawyer. She said it’s extremely easy for people with schizophrenia to get disability. The key is that the process must say you can’t work… You can also get additional money via your parents income if you apply correctly. My doctor said that I could work so I didn’t get it and now I feel pressured to work. :frowning:

I’ve tried two times and failed. Probably because the one time they asked for a doctor to examine me I think I aced the test he gave me. That is with alogia. Now I’m just trying to find some other way to make money. Hard to find work.

Did you make clear to your doctor what symptoms and problems you are experiencing from schizophrenia?
Maybe you did not explain clearly enough what you are going through.

Thanks for asking. I complain to him every month and just lost my job due to inability to work when he signed for me… But he’s kind of young and keeps advising me to work… He’s leaving now for a new doctor so I thought I’d try again.

just say whatever is true. Can you really work?

I tried working and got fired :frowning: Still recovering from that.
But I talk to myself all day long, how will I work for someone?

I used to work with a normal that would talk to herself. It was always about what she was doing. So I guess no it wasn’t that strange. I work Mostly by myself and like it that way.

I’m not trying to be mean but doctors can’t read minds. We can’t assume they know what we’re going through or what we are thinking or what we are experiencing. We have to tell them. A lot of a psychiatrists patients are not schizophrenics. The psychiatrist deals with patients who suffer from depression, or OCD, bi-polar, anxiety, etc. So one of us comes along and he might not understand all the way how severe this illness is.

Those other illnesses have elements in them that are as serious as ours but we have the most serious and disabling mental illness there is and it is one of the top ten disabling diseases on the planet And for a schizophrenic, appearing normal to other people is a mixed blessing. People judge by appearances and if you look fine, then they assume you are functional despite what’s going on inside.

So try to be clear with the new doctor how badly your disease affects you. On the first visit I would not advise telling him too many delusions or too much crazy stuff (sorry, I use the term for myself too) Kind off feel him out in the beginning and don’t freak him out. He’s heard a lot of weird stuff from patients and psychiatrists are trained to not freak out when they hear weird or embarrassing stuff from patients but you do not want to overwhelm him with too much of that stuff. Good luck @anon62973308.

I was also be pressured to work. I hated the job interviews because i was so parinoid. For me I enjoy working and if you can pull it off it’s good for recovery. Working alone is ideal for me I tend to avoid people at work. But enjoy the small brief talk.

The story of my life!

I fet what you’re saying but feel like my doc really was too inexperienced. Every time I tell him all my problems he just nods and tells me to deal with it.

My doctor has always been really good when it comes to such things. I don’t work and find that eventually the stress of trying to do a job eats away at me till I fall apart. These days I live with parents on a government pension. Might be time to try another doctor. Your doctor should be supportive of you!

I just applied for disability. I’ve been working for my husband doing basic office stuff because when the symptoms get bad I can just go (we live in an apartment attached to his office) or on days where I can’t face it… I just don’t have to. But I can’t work elsewhere and in reality he’s the one with the job, I just help him. Prior to Sz I worked as an RN.

I wish you luck and hope you will keep us informed of how the process works for you.
