How do I ask as a guy
Did you experience a greater difficulty going through this time,
Were you Meds changed,
Or the doctor’s keep a closer eye on you
Not there yet, but I wondered the same.
Docs here don’t know a thing about female hormones. They even denied pms existed. Every woman I know laughs at them for that. I asked my doc about menopause but he doesnt know anything. I’m on my own.
I’ve heard psychotic problems can get worse after menopause, because estrogen protects against psychosis. And it drops. And you may need more meds. I have also heard women with menstrual psychosis can have their issue stop with induced menopause (hormones/surgery). So:
I’ve been in perimenopause for about eight years, and I’m just about in total menopause.
I’ve read that schizophrenia gets diagnosed later in women anyway, but that there is a second age period for diagnosis that starts in the 40s when we start going through menopause.
That was true for me. I’d been diagnosed with DID (multiple personality) for about 20 years, but then got sza added when I was 45. I have both diagnoses.
I had some years off antipsychotics in my 30s, but was started on low dose Haldol around 40 years old, and then started riding the med roller coaster. Im on Risperidone now, which is my 7th AP, and very effective, but prior to that, I had some bad med experiences.
As for being watched more carefully, I’ve seen a psychiatric nurse practitioner weekly for the last two years. Every time I try to go less frequently, I melt down. I have excellent insurance, and I see her over Zoom.
My condition has definitely gotten worse with age. I am doing some serious trauma work about some childhood abuse right now. It’s really helping me get stronger emotionally, and my meds are ideal, but of course, no med is perfect. I’m hoping that as I do more trauma processing, that my overall sense of paranoia will improve.
I have church in a few hours, and im currently awake at 3:20 am where I am, but I’ll check back with you later. I may not be able to answer all your questions, but I’ll do my best.
Thanks @anon28552576. A woman I know and I spoke about perimenopause. That neither of us even knew it existed, until we had some issues, googled it, and thought: aaaahhh, so that is what will happen. We felt a bit betrayed by our “sisters”. Because nobody ever talks. We knew nothing, except our mum’s hotflashes.
It’s real helpful to know experiences of other women. My male doctors know just as little as I do.
Sorry you went through all that bad stuff. And your condition got worse. I really hope your trauma work helps you improve more.
I just, finally, have found a psychologist that isn’t afraid of my psychosis. And wants to work on trauma. I really hope it works. I trust on her.
