The influential relationship between the Beatles and the Beach Boys is interesting to me.

The Beatles released Rubber Soul on December 3, 1965, which was followed by the Beach Boys releasing Pet Sounds on May 16, 1966, which was followed by the Beatles releasing Sgt. Pepper’s on May 26, 1967.

@77nick77 , how much influence do you think the Beatles and the Beach Boys had on each other?

The Beatles rode the crest of whatever was happening musically and in popular cultural. at the time. They were groundbreaking and influential but what other artists were doing in turn influenced the Beatles.

They simply outgrew the ties and suits, right? With what was happening in the world in the late 60’s and especially in the United States and England it would have made them look silly and outdated to wear those suits AND those original haircuts. . The suits were just a marketing ploy by Brian Epstein anyways to help the Beatles to appeal to record execs and to get in the door with record companies and Epstein’s idea to make them look squeaky clean in the media and to appeal to the teeny boppers who at that time loved the boy-next-door image and (perceived) innocence of the Beatles.

But of course the Beatles were anything but innocent after spending time in Hamburgs red light district when they were still teens and performing in dives and dangerous places and having women friends or girlfriends who were strippers.

Part of that plan by Epstein was to appeal to parents too but I think he failed in that regard because even though they appealed to all ages, the electric guitar, the long hair and later, the drugs turned off parents.Yeah, the Beatles didn’t invent being hippies, but they just followed along and contributed to the hippie movement and embraced it. All you need is love.

George was always my favorite Beatle.
Something mysterious about him.

Well the simple answer is that the Beatles admired the harmonies of the Beach Boys and the production standards set by Brian Wilson. And the Beach Boys admired the Beatles like most people did. But yeah, “Pet Sounds” was part of what inspired Sgt. Peppers.

I loved the beach boys but didn’t like the beatles. Both were a bit before my time though.

i always find it hard to understand how the beatles were so big…maybe its just i wasnt around in the sixties…

personally i find music by snow patrol to be much better

There’s a million reasons why they got so huge. One basic reason is that they came along at the right place, at the right time. The 1960’s were a turbulent time and with the Kennedy assassination, the Vietnam war, and all the huge race issues being addressed, the world needed a distraction and that’s kind of what the Beatles were with their ever cheery pop tunes and lyrics…

With all the hype and Beatlemania and all that stuff, the Beatles were at their core just a great little rock and roll/ pop band. To add to their appeal, personally all of them were charming and funny and witty and people just loved them.

@77nick77 covered it all pretty well.

The Beatles were the world’s first ‘boy band’, and after the Kennedy assassination the world was desperate for something positive and hopeful. Their music and charming personalities dovetailed with all of this mayhem at the right time and gave the world joy again.
