Alrighty. This is a topic that flares the pits of hell for people with mental illness… What’s your standpoint for discrimination of mental illness? Do you feel like police treat the mentally ill much more differently?
I believe when police don’t have proper training for how to recognize and de-escalate a crisis mental health situation yes they do treat them a lot differently. Lack of education is the number one cause for excessive police violence of any kind.
Logically, you’d think that police and law enforcement would be trained to handle situations with citizens who suffer from mental illness…
my brother in law was arrested a few years ago for domestic violence and assaulting a police officer while he was off his meds. when he finally got out of jail he was covered in bruises and welts with a black eye and a busted noise
That’s terrible. Why wasn’t he directed to a mental health facility instead of jail?
When the cops showed up at my house there was one police officer that was de escalating the situation.
He was calm and steady, he talked me into going to the Hospital.
But there was another cop that was stirring things up.
He had his hand on his gun and was very stern with me.
Yes it all boils down to how educated they are.
Too many cops these days miss the mark.
But slowly things are moving towards the right direction.
I am hopeful for the future.
The police in my area are aware of mental illness. I was rear ended on new years eve and when the officer was questioning me, he asked if i was on any psych meds because i was slow to speak . He also asked if i was drinking. I told him i was on meds for schizoaffective disorder. He was very friendly toward me.
I think its cause the wife in the domestic call was the niece of the sheriff,
I think they don’t always treat us differently and they should. They sometimes treat us like we are willfully defiant. So they tend to hold a grudge and sometimes retaliate. On the other hand the ones trained to deal with mi and that’s all they do all day are really pretty good in my personal experience.
Nope. Neither are the majority trained on how to deescalate any potentially violent situation either or only receive minimal training. Not trained on how to respond to people’s pets if they have to enter a home so they just shoot them if they’re barking or whatever. Not trained on how to deal with the mentally disabled so people with low functioning autism are often victims of police violence as well.
There are some exceptions and in these communities where officers have received specialized training police violence incidences have dropped DRASTICALLY.
Just heard another story where a mother of 4 called police cause she thought she was being robbed but when police showed up and saw her holding a knife, they shot her dead
When I called the police on myself to talk with them for some consolation, they treated me like a hostile person even though I called the police on myself. He had his hand on his gun going towards me and a grin on his face like “WTH is up with this kid”…Lol I was messed up it was august 2012, and I assumed they “knew” I was the chosen one already so I had that approach to it all. Then they took me in an ambulance an involuntarily hospitalized me. But that was good. Then I was treated like crap in the hospital I was mocked by nurses and injected with Haldol for no reason during the admissions process.
They shot a guy dead up the road from me. He attacked his wife and kids with a knife. He then ran outside with the knife when the police showed up. He went after them. You threaten a cop with a weapon you are the one who is going to die. From what i heard the attacker had no previous violence or mental health issues. I wonder what made him snap. Or i wonder if he was fighting with something all along and hid it well.
OH man I remember that,. I was in IOP and someone who lived in your town told us about that
I got arrested in your town in 2011 for a psychotic episode. I was pulled out of my car at gunpoint, but fortunately they didn’t shoot!!!
Considering you sounded like you were highly psychotic at the time I doubt they injected you with antipsychotic for no reason
That is a scary experience though with the cops.
They shouldn’t be pointing a gun at someone unless that person has a gun pointed at them or is threatening to use a weapon on someone else.
Actually my brother is a cop. I think cops don’t know as much about mental illness on purpose. Think if there was a gunfight and they sent a bunch of doctors… We’d be looking for a bunch of new doctors… Cops are easier to train and more plentiful.
