I sold my car in 2014 and so I have not had a car in over six years. I manage to do my things with a bicycle. And you?
I don’t have a car right now because I crashed mine when I was psychotic five years ago and never replaced it. Borrowed one for awhile back in VA, but don’t have one now that I’m in CA. To be honest, I doubt I’ll even look at buying one until Corona Virus is over. There’s just not enough justification to own a vehicle and pay the insurance on it when all I can do is go to the grocery store with it.
How do you guys get groceries without a car?
I have a car, but I don’t drive it much. I can’t imagine not having one, though. You kinda need one in the States, unless you live in the city. I live in the 'burbs
I have three backpacks, so I can choose one when I go and get some groceries. I am a backpack person
You are right, in the USA a car is needed. When I lived there I always had a car, one Volvo 240DL and Mazda 262. I lived in this Mazda over two years before I shipped it with my things to Europe. In big cities of Europe people ride their bicycles a lot: Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Berlin and so on.
My 2002 car became nonfunctional May 8th of this year, and I sold it to a salvage yard. I live in the downtown of the city, and I walk, ride the bus, or use Uber. Groceries I have delivered, and I order stuff online and have it delivered.
I couldn’t as my employment requires to have and drive a van.
If I lost my drivers license again I would be totally screwed financially.
Hopefully my recent disagreements with the mental health services won’t come up when my license expires next year and I need them to sign it off again
The board & care home I lived in from 1990-95 didn’t allow anyone to drive or own a car. So I took the bus everywhere.
That meant an hour and a half bus ride to and from work for 4 or 5 days a week, a 45 minute round trip bus ride to college twice a week and 5 or 6 AA, CA, and NA meetings a week. I did all that for five years. Not to mention taking the bus for an hour to visit my sister on weekends and anywhere else I needed to go.
I had to do, what I had to do; I had no choice.
I moved out and rented a room in my sisters duplex and a year later I finally got a car. I’ve been driving ever since.
If for some reason I couldn’t drive anymore I imagine I would be back to taking the bus.
Over 90% of adults in my city have their own cars so when I was driven around by others it was impossible to have much of a social life. I still did a number of trips that my relatives took me too when I was young but if they got upset with me it was ridiculously easy for them to use the withdrawal of transportation to express their displeasure and as a means of punishment. It’s been rough during the pandemic as the group home has limited the amount of driving they do and have cut off allowing my relatives to visit. It’s kinda like being in prison at times.
No, I wouldn’t manage without a car, because I drive around a lot to give me something to do.
Yes I do that too!
I don’t have a car right now. I don’t plan on getting one. I get by getting stuff online and friends taking us to the grocery store.
I don’t think I could manage without a car - and my husband! I always drive with him. If I was on my own I’d not be confident, I’d be too scatter brained. He helps with navigation etc.
Public transport in our country not so good. I’d take the train if it was safer, been on it once with a friend and loved it so much! Don’t know how to use public transport unfortunately. Nor how to ride a bicycle - which sounds kinda nice! Very eco friendly!
I suppose I could manage with only a bike if I had to - I’m close to amenities
I have a degenerative disease which means that my muscles are degenerating. So eventually I would lose function of my legs and even my breathing ability. So I would like to use a car so that I could drive myself to places and become more independent.
Actually i was considering selling my car because the county I live in has public transit. Since I’m on disability I can ride for a dollar.
But it’s kind of ghetto I feel so I think I’ll be keeping my.car.
I haven’t had a car in 12 years. I don’t really need one. I have several groceryshops nearby and family lives pretty close. For those rare occasions when I need a car for transporting something heavy for instance I can just borrow from my family or rent a car for a day.
I remember when I had a car I used it for just about anything, almost manic. It’s a good change to use my legs and get some fresh air. Also it’s stress free to just sit on the bus and let someone else drive.
I have six cars in my garage and driveway. I couldn’t imagine being without one. The bus doesn’t come anywhere near here.
My old car is often in disrepair, but I can’t afford a new car payment at the moment.
Thankfully I have access to many things within walking or biking distance of my house. It takes me 20 minutes to get to work on my bike.
Sometimes you just need a car though, like if you want to get things at Costco or drop off clothing donations.
