well my friends have all been working for years now. I will never catch up to them probably wealth wise. but I am pretty happy with the thought of never owning another car again. so I wont have car insurance, or fuel costs, or have to shell out $10,000 dollars every 10 years or so on a nice used car. i just find it to be so much more peaceful when i don’t drive. looking forward to it. my license expires in 4 years, i don’t know if i will renew or not. it depends on my living situation and working situation. hopefully not.
I sold my last car five years ago. I surrendered my drivers license this year. I feel like a free woman.
@Lifer, if you are at all unsure about whether or not you will need your drivers license in the future, I would not let my license lapse if I were you. If you want to drive again, you would have to take the written and the drivers test all over again to reinstate your license.
o. do you live in a city? how do you get around? I can’t live here and not have a license or else I would need rides all the time.
im looking forward to moving back downtown and walking or riding a bicycle. im going green haha.
o yeah, I had to retake the written test, because I let it lapse. but I didn’t have to retake the driving test. I think it’s for the best for everybody if I don’t drive though. I get distracted sometimes, and also im so timid I can’t drive on the interstate or foreign places where I don’t know where my turns are. I really should not be driving. im ok in town here because I only go 5 miles round trip and speed limit is 30mph for 4 of those miles.
I live in a big city (almost a million residents), but the public transportation here is lousy. I get around by Veterans Administration van that takes me to the VA hospital for my doctors appointments. I also use my friends for free transportation to Church and to my volunteer job and volunteer meetings. I use a public transport system here in town called Moby transit sometimes. It’s for disabled people. I also use Uber quite a bit.
But, I’m a homebody at heart and I rarely go anywhere except to Church, volunteer job and doctor appointments.
ok. that’s good to know you can get around when you need to. I don’t like to leave home much either, but probably will go out a bit more when I move downtown.
it’s not a big city like a million residents, more like 10,000 people. I think I will be able to afford a decent home or a nice fixer upper in 6 years. it will probably be on a hill though, maybe not, there is something always coming available. I guess it’s not the most popular place to live but it’s ok.
I would still maybe need to get a ride to the hospital for doctor’s appointments though.
“I will make up for lost time on my friends…”
sounds a little like you’re trying to keep up with the joneses?
I paraphrase some advice that helped me: Sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes you’re behind, and in the end, the race is only with yourself.
that’s solid advice. Im not really competing with my friends. but I can’t help but see how differently our lives are turning out and compare my situation to theirs. anyways im at peace with my life for the most part, but would like to strive to do better financially.
I wish i would still have a driverlicense cause i like the outdoors and camping, as well can’t i see my family cause they are out of reach by public transport. But without a car i have so much more time. I don’t have to maintain a car anymore. I didn’t realize how stressful a car is.
Yes. Cars were always more stress than I could ever handle. I’m glad I got rid of mine.
I remember the traffic. Xtimes i witness roadrage in the car and on public transport. I don’t have to deal with it anymore and play with my mobilephone while on the bus or train.
