Wish there was something effective for cognition

I really hope we get a med for it eventually. I was a pretty bright kid. IQ was around 135. I still test around there but functionally there’s no way that’s an accurate reflection of what I can do now. It used to be but definitely not anymore. I guess it’s part of my personality. I over value intellect. Makes it more painful to be like this. Comes in waves. Sometimes I’m pretty clear other times like right now I’m so damn foggy. I know I’ve posted about this before but wow is it frustrating. Just wanted to vent.

I feel the same way, i honestly do. I can’t concentrate for long, so even if i read on my subject of study, i don’t get much progress and stall when it comes to converting short term memory into long term memory; recall is fine, but storing into memory isn’t and it bites me in the back when times come for an essay – something i used to be fantastic at.

i highly valued intellect growing up, much like yourself. i hope things get better somehow. i’m not sure how to console you, because i feel fed up and upset with the same thing, so i’m in that boat too

Thanks @AppleKidd. It helps just to hear from someone in a similar situation. Idk if you’ve seen these but they’re recruiting. Just in case there’s a site near by you.

I was smart. People gave me feedback all the time on how smart I was. I could think things through quickly and see what others could not. I am below average now. It’s a hit to the self-esteem. I’m so glad that I was more than a brain in a jar before or this decline would have ended me.

I think motivation is at least as important as intellect. I’ve met people who were level with me in terms of iq results who went on to achieve great things. While I struggle to get by. That’s mainly because my drive is lacking.

Have you tried setting small reasonable goals and working towards them, then setting larger goals if/when you hit them?

In my experience, others mileage may differ, schizophrenia can adversely affect the ability to apply one’s intellect effectively to real life problems/tasks.

Yeah, in other areas. Quite a few of them. Do you mean cognitive goals?

If you’re talking about cognitive goals, I could probably do a bit more. Maybe study something with an actual curriculum. I play a lot of chess and dual n back for what that’s worth. If your talking general goals I’m working steadily on a few of them.

There are over the counter supplements like ginko biloba that claim to improve cognition. I took ginko for a little while, and it did seem like my thinking was clearer, but it is so easy to delude yourself over such things. You might do some research on supplements that improve cognition and try them. I’m making no guarantees, but you might try it.

I’ve tinkered with supplements for almost 10 years. Some have helped, some have almost gotten me hospitalized. Non have made a meaningful difference.

Sorry guys if i’m coming off as overly negative or hostile. Just to be clear I’m doing fine. Life is fine. Things are moving forward and generally I feel ok enough. But as someone who fancied themselves as somewhat intellectual who’s currently having trouble typing this out. Im frustrated.

Yes, drive can certainly be an issue when it comes to achievement.

Everyone has their ups and downs. I believe typing is more of a manual dexterity issue than it is one of intellect. I too fancy myself as an intellectual, but there have been times in the past where I will read a poem and it will completely escape me. But that probably isn’t due to an intellectual deficit. Some works of literature, especially poetry, you need someone to explain the symbolism and subtext to you. Take it easy, and try intellectual things that you already have some insight to, and maybe you can restore your belief in your own intellect.

Yes. I’m talking about pushing yourself cognitively at least daily and keeping a journal recording your efforts.

Actually, APs (ideally) are supposed to treat cognitive/negative symptoms. Maybe in limited ways. The meds I take daily help me think/concentrate, give me energy, help me feel better. But yeah, the effectiveness is limited. Some days, I feel the benefit better than other days.

To be more specific, Geodon is like an upper/activator. Tries to replenish/recharge neurotransmitters. Seroquel works after I sleep. When I awake, that’s when tries to replenish/recharge neurotransmitters.

APs are supposed to be able to treat cognitive deficits (or not enough neurotransmitters). If the patient has SCZ, that is. That’s what SCZ is (not enough neurotransmitters).

Yeah I feel you I had the SZ organically, I started getting sick from age 12. You sound and write smart tho. Just like me but the thought disorder and my Asperger’s syndrome can make it so hard to think straight.
Mange your SZ your way that’s the priority. Your brain has a remarkable ability to heal. But I have had that frustration even now since getting into another full ep since Novemeber
So frustrating knowing what you mean and others just not getting it. Then u get more worked up lol :joy: yeah it’s a vicious cycle :scream::pray::pray::pray::pray::heart:

Yeah but we are all wired up different and some meds work for one patient better than another. I grew up with cigarettes and they work for me but have some bad side effects like lung cancer lol. I quit for 6yrs so can do so again. But appreciate its not that easy for everyone. Some people don’t even like cigs :joy::joy::joy:
