Why are schizophrenics so into music?

I suppose many of us find it soothing. I listen to music during pretty much all of my free time. I usually would rather have music playing than have the tv on.

Because we value symbolism and take in more through our senses. We are hypersensitive to aesthetically pleasing things.

I doubt they are anymore than anyone else, some people like it a lot and some like me hardly listen to it

For me, it breaks up the static and noise and talking, and it creates a single focus. It’s pleasant, and/or intense and keeps my attention and makes me feel and think one thing at a time. It’s relaxing.

I hate most music. people playing loud music through radios have birthed my distaste for popular music. also I believe that music can give messages. :disappointed_relieved:

I have a strong distaste for popular music, as well, but I love metal and some hard rock, mostly lesser-known bands in both cases. Mushroomhead is my favorite metal band, though lately I’ve been on a Blue Felix kick, ever since seeing them kill it at a concert a few weeks ago. The two hard rock bands I’m most into right now are Like a Storm and Righteous Vendetta. Not all music is bad, but I agree that most of the mainstream stuff is garbage. If it feeds your sz, though, maybe it’s not the best thing for you.

I’m not really into music. I only listen to it if I’m having auditory hallucinations that are like whispers because it kind of blocks them out. But other than that I don’t really ever listen.

I don’t know what hypersensitive means, but I’m definitely the type of dude who likes the concept of aesthetically pleasing. :dark_sunglasses:

This is the one and only best rock song ever https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dM6elRs7F5k

Really? When I tried putting headphones on and turning the music up to shut out hallucinations I just heard a blend of the two, rather than the music drowning out the hallucination. I only hallucinate if I’m fully, terribly psychotic, though, and that has only happened to me three times.

My voices block all external sound so I miss lyrics but if I’m concentrated on something they tend to go away

I checked it out; pretty good, though I’m just not into having techno elements in rock. Nothing wrong with it, just not my thing. The only band I ever liked that did that was Stabbing Westward, a band from the 90’s, but they were industrial metal, so a bit different.

It’s not like it blocks them out completely, and it only works when the voices are like whispers where I can’t tell what they’re saying. The music just gives me something to focus on that I can understand instead of hearing just these whispers.
