Why no Schizophrenic Social Movement?

Why hasn’t there yet been a social movement for schizophrenia? We have similar rights as everyone and we are just human. I’m tired of seeing people on the street being tortured by whatever is going on in their head cause they can’t afford meds. Or not being able to afford housing because their illness is so debilitating they can’t work. Or the world not separating the disease from the individual. I even bet there have been cases where people haven’t gotten jobs because they revealed their illness. Why can’t we spend more money on learning about the brain then new ways to blow people in half. I’m not joking, there should be some serious social change in this department…Where’s the schizo MLK when you need him.

I think because most of us are invisible. Most of us are too sick to join or create a social movement. Not enough people have it, there’s not enough funding, and older parents can only do so much. It’s not as edgy or creative or popular as Bipolar. Schizophrenics have a bad rap as being homeless or dangerous.

That’s a shame it would be great to see some type of push forward in a better direction then just throwing us off to the side. I mean change the name at least I don’t like using schizophrenia i just say split mind syndrome. But still it makes me upset that none of the things I originally posted about ever happen. I mean at least be able to catch it in kids at a younger age so the next generation can live better and kids prone to it can get the rightly deserved help.

I think the reason is because so many people are afraid to step into the spotlight. You are now a part of the social movement! We are the face of schizophrenia, so let’s make it a good face. You can start by being open about your illness with friends, teachers, family, and whoever else. Talk openly about your problems, explain what goes on in your head.

I tell my one friend to unplug the X Box whenever I come over because I don’t like the facial recognition and voice recognition software. I celebrate things like lowering my dose or having a successful therapy session. Things like this helps people realize there is more to schizophrenia than what they see on the news. It makes us more relatable.

So yes, there is a social movement. It just is in the small stages right now. And it takes courage to join in, but I think you can do it!

I really don’t think we need to change the name. We just have to show people at the name isn’t actually as scary as they think. The rate of violent crimes among those with schizophrenia is exactly the same as the general population. I tell that statistic to everyone I know. It helps.

I’ve considered double majoring in studio art, so I can use that platform to get recognition. I’m also trying to make friends with a local blogger who is great. I don’t know if his agenda lines up with ours though.

Otherwise, I’m in the closet. Which by the way is how some people think we should address our movement. We should mimic the homosexual social movement. I need a cable TV show to be on. If I go into real estate I could be like the Property Brothers (because some people confuse Sz with Multiple Personality Disorder). LOL!

I could always grab a microphone and start preaching on a street corner. But I think I’d conjure some negative attention. And yea its hard to be open about it. I feel like I should get a t shirt that hints at it but is welcoming at the same time. Maybe a Calvin and Hobbes t that would be cool

Avoiding crowds. Stressful.

Mentally Ill March on Washington anyone? I could be the Malcolm X of this movement. I’m more of the aggressive type in my arguments anyway. We just need an SZ MLK, Gandhi, Gloria Steinem and Nelson Mandela and we’d be golden. I’m serious I really want to speak up on the issues I brought up in my first post on this thread just don’t know how.

I nominate @darksith as sz MLK!

But seriously, I like the t shirt idea. TWLOHA shirts made huge advancements for depression. What would the sz awareness shirt say?

“Schizophrenia: when your brain has a party and you’re not invited.”

Best description ever. And I second your nomination
