Why is it that when I pick up a hobby it's all I ever think about for the next few weeks to months

I can’t do anything else. Until I get bored.

Is it linked to autism this bursts of obsessiveness and ADHD when I get bored?

Maybe it’s because when you really get into a hobby you can’t think about anything else, even unpleasant feelings like sadness. However, when it gets repetitive you get bored.

What else do you have to think about?

It’s all I think about from the time I get up to the time I fall asleep mostly. Recently it’s my blanket

I feel you… Out side of my mental illness all I do is hobbies. I don’t know what normal people do anymore :joy:

I also suspect I’m on the spectrum…

Do you think it is hyperfixation? You don’t need to have ADHD or autism for experiencing increased short term obsession with something.

@shutterbug @ThePoet can you guys chime in? How did you guys stay with specific hobby after early excitement is over?

I struggle with it too.

Honestly I also jump from hobby to hobby as well but I can say these two things. 1 to try to stick to the same couple of hobbies and bounce between them. And 2 I try to treat my hobbies like my diet and do a bit of each category each day. Otherwise I understand that I’ll soon desire to do the activities im neglecting. Like if you cut out carbs you’ll soon crave carbs, so I try to have each food category in moderation.

Theres 4 categories of bodily activities

Working the mind
Working the heart and lungs
Working the gutt
Working the arms and legs

Mind I do reading and such activities

Heart and lungs I sing and practice public speaking

Gutt I try to fast and take care of my general health with med, supplements, etc.

Arms and legs I do exercises like running pushups boxing etc.

If you do a little of each category every day you’ll never miss to a great extent any of them. Or at least try to bounce between a few every few days or so so you don’t get completely burnt out in one.

That’s an interesting analogy. Stops things from becoming boring.

It’s better, you don’t wasting your money in it.
