Why is Elyn Saks a role model?

Schiz can’t be cured with psychotherapy twice a week
I’m really not trying to put a downer on her or anyone … Just don’t understand why a fluke of nature can give talks and say how she has recovered… Surely enough people go off meds to try and see if they have recovered as it is
Sure - inspirational but what is recovery while taking meds to free a person of symptoms less celebrated -it’s more common sure
But the talent Elyn Saks has to come off meds
That’s not part of a hard won natural progression
It’s a fluke
Yes
Some people recover
Big deal

I don’t get it. It is a big deal to recover. It’s terrible to be stuck in a mood where you think you can’t accomplish anything because you have this problem. I think I would benefit from CBT for example, just don’t have the time right now or the money to pursue it.

And, you’re functional, you are on a recovery path.

Sorry, just think meds free is false hope

I tried like ■■■■ to be functional for 15 years, failing and crashing at every step

Had to find the right meds or whatever and keep low stress

CBT or other therapy is very helpful
I’ve had other therapy
It helps loads but if it were a cure they’d prescribe it

Yep, I agree most people need meds. I sure need them, and my stress is something I need to work on.

I agree with you with the meds thing, and also that just talk therapy isn’t a cure.

But one can benefit from that.

I had psychotherapy and it didn’t help much. Ended up just blaming my parents for everything without the need for self criticism… Depends on the psychotherapist too.

I get that she’s been there and now practices law - pretty amazing - I think many of us can live to tell the tale and it is good to have a spokesperson
She is good for stigma and does help people with schitz
Just hopeful that recovery doesn’t have to mean off meds
Would mean next to none of us recover

Yeah I get what you’re saying now. But everyone is different you know? Some deal better with meds than others, there isn’t a magical button one can push to make everything okay like this one.

But I also think it’s great when someone is able to function so highly without meds.

my mom definitely doesnt believe in therapys for me… one ex of my pdoc also… i am struggling finding the right med and the right dosage… i spent 13 years in madness with a lot of weed at the time and now i am a mess. i relieve one symptom, some other one is becoming critical… my sz friend doesnt take her meds and she s saying me to do the same thing. she doesnt even know what is paranoia anymore… i find my paranoia tough enough…

Wanting to recover very literally caused every one of my relapses
Stress
Coming off meds
Stress again
Over a year and a half of psychosis directly due to trying to recover
Took that long to accept it I guess

Sorry you had to go through that. Yeah, you’re probably right

You’re doing amazing xxx
It is so helpful giving up weed
Chance for getting the best you can be

But I guess that is natural
Tetraplegics try to walk again

I could never go off meds… I’m doing so well. The idea of another psychotic episode it’s scary enough

i didn’t know that. Did Elyn Saks recover with out meds? I know John Nash did it. I would be looking for tips of f them both. Are you sure Elyn saks recovered without meds.

I think she’s the poster woman of the acceptable face of serious mental illness. She’s done well but it is has to be remembered that she had advantages that many didn’t have ie (a) very high premorbid intelligence (b) quite wealthy background so she could get that intensive psychotherapy…
She had a lot more tools for doing well than many/most of us have.
I think there’s a danger in people trying to match up to her and in most cases failing by a wide mark then feeling like a failure in comparison.

I read her book it was about her journey of realizing she DOES need the meds.
I think you just misinterpreted what she said.

Elyn Saks is Amazing, so is Dr. Fred Frese, an accomplsed psychologist living with Schizophrenia.

Everyone has a different Experience with Schizophrenia, it is such a complex, highly individualized illness, affecting people differently.

There are a lot of people whom I admire, living with Schizophrenia and accomplising some pretty Amazing stuff!

They are not famous, but are just as important - some of them frequent this site.

I just found out there is a local college professor with SZ who manages quite well ,anonymously of course, I mean his students don’t know. And my pdoc told me there is a local judge too.
