Why do we need to exercise?

We have foods to enjoy and to sustain our lives. But what about exercise?

Some people do not like to exercise, but they are advised to do so in order to reap the benefits from exercise.

While I can understand we need foods to be transformed into energy (and we actually enjoy eating), but I cannot understand the need for me to exercise and increase the workload of my physical heart.

Any thoughts?

Aerobic exercise beneficially impacts the cardiovascular tone of the body (lower BP, lower heart rate, increased cardiac reserve), as well as helps with weight and blood sugar management.

There’s a common mantra among physicians that “exercise equals insulin.” Muscles use glucose to generate energy used to contract, burning glycogen stores, and drawing glucose out of the blood. This allows the body to maintain blood glucose levels without adding insulin. It promotes weight loss, further reducing Insulin resistance. Maintaining normal glucose protects the eyes, kidneys and nerves.

In addition, physical activity helps not only the heart but the entire body. You get enlargement of the heart like any muscle that you use regularly and increased blood supply. New receptors are created that help activate muscles and use oxygen more efficiently. There are many other changes that are positive too.

Yes. Exercising gets you healthy. And you’ll want to be healthy as you age. If you do not exercise (and I myself rarely do) you will not have the energy later on when you need it.

I really don’t think that exercising needs to be defended. It’s rewards are obvious.

Exercising and being healthy: good.
Not exercising and letting your body go to pot: bad.

Most of the benefits of exercise have already been pretty nicely summed up here.

I believe the issues with naturally not wanting to exercise comes from our animal nature. In the wild, energy is precious. There isn’t any structured “exercise time” exercise is called survival. If you aren’t doing something necessary for survival as an animal then you are wasting precious energy that may later cost you if you then don’t have it and need to do something survival related. Thus the animal side of the human brain during cardio goes “am I being chased? Am I chasing something? No? Then why am I doing this?”

So long as our basic needs are being met it is natural for us to want to be sedentary so we can save up our energy in the event something bad happens. Unfortunately this doesn’t help us in modern society and ultimately leads to us having shorter lives. (Similarly to how many wild animals raised in captivity have shorter lifespans than they would in the wild)

People need to exercise to keep their bodies and brains nourished with fresh, oxygenated blood. They also need it to keep their bodies fit and toned so they don’t grow old and bent over with pain, and unsteady on their feet, and prone to falling in old age. They need exercise to keep up their endurance and keep strong, flexible and fit. And it goes a long way to keep excess weight off too.

hmm…well it seems like different opinions here. Originally our ancestors did not 'exercise" but they lived. they had harder jobs, less technology and most the times even more culture. Hunting was almost an everyday thing, just like checking your e-mail or your msges here on this site. They didnt realy see it as work like we see work. wether you do it or you dont, you miss out in the end. later on there was farming and other things, but exercise became a early start for showing “style” or what the original “olympics were”. now its sorta a requirement because thats part of the reason why we live up to 80-100 years. especially with cheeseburgers and mass things with cholestorol…its not so much that we are required, we made it that way as time went by. excercise is what i guess you want it to be, you love it?..you like it? you NEED to do it? It depends on the reason, just like reading through this whole message itself.
