While we found that CBT initially improved the ability of patients to function, the benefit was shortlived. CBT failed to alleviate the distress associated with the symptoms of psychosis. CBT also failed to improve quality of life, as measured in a patient’s sense of self, hope, well-being, relationships and so on. Indeed, not one CBT trial has ever reported a rise in quality of life for people diagnosed with schizophrenia.
All forms of therapy are useless when it comes to psychosis. Therapy will never treat or cure chemical imbalances. This idea that therapy could somehow be helpful goes back to the biggest psychiatric fraud ever called freudism and psychoanalysis.
50 yrs of research were lost because psychiatry swallowed the freudian pill instead of focusing on neuroscience.
My pdoc said socializing helps more than therapy
CBT helped with anxiety. That’s about it.
My son was in therapy when he killed himself. It took everyone by surprise. Even his therapist. Obviously, it did my son no good. He was paranoid sz.
And being on this website is socializing. And just look at how good most of us on this website are doing!
Yeah CBT did nothing for me personally… heard it’s good for people with anxiety mostly…
Also, when I say it worked for anxiety, it did not put a dent in my paranoia. So like, it helped me in social situations but in the back of my mind I’m still suspicious of them. Ya know?
Eliminative materialism worked this out back in the 60s
Hooked on phonics worked for me!

I think practical things like proper medication and housing are a lot more important to someone with schizophrenias well being than anything else.
I filed a grievance against my ex-therapist. I figured it was up to me to define who and what I am.
Also, I prefer Transactional Analysis to CBT. Or any client-centered therapy. But the pickings are pretty slim.
I’ve been thinking of trying CBT for anxiety and depression, but yeah, I can see how it wouldn’t be helpful for psychosis. There’s only so much that can be done for severely distorted thoughts.

I don’t think there’s much point in using therapy for positive symptoms right now, but if you ask people who have recovered from schizophrenia, you will find that most of them stress the importance of therapy. Myself included. With just medication, I would be on disability now. Instead, I’m doing very well in a challenging full-time education.
However, I don’t see how CBT would help with anything unless you have depression or something in addition to schizophrenia.
I seen a therapist for every two weeks for about 3 months. After bringing her back up to speed about my file she in the end did nothing for me. In the end I got so pissed off I stopped seeing her. I honestly think councillors and therapists should be long term. He’ll I’ve even changed doctors now. Like that’s gonna help. At least my pdoc is hanging in there.
As the others have noted, you need something other than just SZ to benefit from therapy. I know, for me, I learned coping mechanisms for the positives on my own (mostly reality-testing stuff), but therapy did help for some of my anxious behaviors and thoughts and hopefully will help with my depression when I start it up again.
I’d like to add that I think sz brings with it for most people many problems that meds don’t currently help with, but that a good therapist can help you with.
