Not putting this in meta… maybe I should but I guess I kinda want a discussion
And I’m not saying it’s a bad rule… just curious about it.
I understand how proper deep talk on religion could be triggering. However sometimes posts are flagged just for mentioning God, and that’s what I don’t understand.
There are many words I know people can be triggered by and I get that’s one of them, but they can’t all be avoided
So out of curiosity, why is it that some mentions of religion are left up and some removed? What’s the distinction?
There’s no good reason to be honest. If anything talking about your religious delusions would be more triggering for others. Religion is helpful for people with mental health problems and its somewhat regulated because its a challenge for some people to separate their delusions with religious realities. But that can happen with any topics. I’ve seen people talking about aliens here and that was fine? Some of the mods don’t believe in God so they’ve generally banned it on the pretense of it starting fights which it doesn’t. Even mentioning God can get you banned for weeks but you can post about all profane things all you want.
There’s also the issue of only posts that get flagged can be dealt with. If no one flags an obviously religious post, it will likely be left alone when in ideal circumstances it would have been flagged and dealt with.
I almost posted that based on these rules we shouldn’t allow talk about aliens either. Just posting it now since you mentioned it too. For me the alien stuff is worse, I live with it on the television in Virginia constantly and I’m sick of it, person I’m living with is full on delusional about it.
In my experience very little of what you said is true.
Aliens are also off limits in most cases. Mentioning God will not get you banned for weeks unless you do so so repeatedly that you’re being belligerent and not listening to the mods. The mods opinions on religion have nothing to do with the forum rules.
because… everyone thinks theirs is the one and only right answer… all others are evil and the devil… plus it’s a triggering subject… just look what this thread did… in fact it should be flagged you got your answer… maybe delete it…yea?
I am religious and agree with the secular slant of this forum. Religion is a very triggering topic for schizophrenics who often think they are a character in their holy book of choice.
It isn’t for everybody, some schizophrenics just can’t handle it.
My two cents - I honestly understand the frustration for some members who feel picked on for not discussing religion. I also understand that its a great source of comfort for many. When i was a boy i sang in a catherdral choir as treble and then went back row as tenor - and they were joyous times for me.
But now for me as a SZ - i find it dangerous. Some might say i lost my faith. BUT - Any religous discussion these days for me - makes me ruminate on whats posted and feeds into my delusion “that im an angel”. And thats detrimental to my mental health. Im sorry for those that rely on it for comfort - but im glad its heavily moderated. If it wasnt i would probably just leave.
The mods’ religious views are not a factor in this rule or the enforcement of it. The rule against religion is based on thorough experience with how these discussions create conflict on this forum and how they trigger others. We do have to balance that with the purpose of this forum, which is to provide support for people with psychotic disorders and help them recover, and that’s why we generally allow posts where members seek help for religious delusions.
We will not ban people for posting about religion unless it is obvious that they knew they were breaking a rule.
