Why are meds for such a serious illness so expensive

my insurance saved me 900 something dollars and i would be so ■■■■■■ without insurance i cant afford anything i know there is one cheap med, haldol, but it is a first gen ap so the side effects are really messed up, i really hope my insurance keeps working because i would be pretty much completely screwed without it

Psych meds are expensive cuz the demand is relatively small but aimed at chronic conditions that require their daily use. They develop newer ones cuz they get to keep the patent (and profit) for each new med for 7 years before generics can be produced…and when they find a new market, they can keep the patent longer, like saying that this or that antipsychotic can now help depression for example… nobody profits off of producing haloperidol anymore, so they develop a new med that costs hundreds a month but has less side effects… It’s the same reason behind why hardly any new antibiotics are produced, cuz there’s no money in a drug that someone only uses once.
