just got my statement from my insurance provider. man are meds expensive. I wonder why they choose such an expensive med for me? anything more affordable?
Geodon, and first generation ap’s
so far I’ve only paid $40 out of pocket to meet my deductible or whatever, but insurance has paid 18,000 for the year. also I think I qualified for extrahelp not sure what this is, I believe its a Medicaid program, it says they’ve paid an additional 5,000.
I guess I don’t have to worry about until it starts costing me personally.
Im on haldol. I use the drops. I dont pay (everyone has insurance here, and meds like these are always paid by insurance), but i Googled it aan its 9 euro’s a bottle in some pharmacy. I think i use a bottle every…I dont know…1.5 months or so?? Or 1, 2? No idea. But cheap.
Pdocs don’t take into account how expensive meds are when they prescribe them.
I used to be on risperdone at $10 a month thru GoodRx. Now I’m on geodon at $51 per month, also through GoodRx.
I’m on a first generation AP and I’m paying $135 a month. It’s for 45 Haldol 20 mg tablets (I take 30 mg a day). It was around $50 but the manufacturer jacked the price up two months ago. Sucks.
haloperidol generic haldol, cheap and fast acting.
It really depends on where you live (country) and what type of insurance you have.
In Canada, there are some generic sz drugs available, but generally not the ones that doctors prefer to use. That will be changing in the next few years. Highly effective drugs like Abilify will become available in generic form, which could lower the cost of therapy.
Haloperidol (Haldol) and chlorpromazine (Thorazine) are available from Walmart and many other pharmacies for $4 (for a month’s supply). Risperidone (Risperdal) is available generically but costs about $30 for a month’s supply (2 mg). Olanzapine (Zyprexa) has also become generic but I don’t have access to the price. A double strength pill of any of the above cut in half will cut your cost in half.
Your physician should be able to look at the formulary for your insurance and pick a less expensive alternative. You could also discuss this with your pharmacist and insurance company.
God I don’t want to know what my AP costs since it’s brand shiny new. My insurance already sent me a sassy letter about taking my medication as instructed after I quit vraylar. Sorry it made me suicidal insurance
I’m sure you qualified for extra help. What meds are you on?
I must be on the most expensive one vraylar. I’m currently on SSI and have no copay for it, but in ten months I’ll have a job but my the firm I’ll be working for pays for insurance and pays well so I’m sure I’ll be able to stay on it despite the ridiculous cost. I talked about going on geodon with my psychiatrist because it’s so much cheaper than abilify which is what I was taking but he didn’t think it would be a good idea. I started on respirdal but it made me gain weight like crazy and lactate so I was switched to abilify for a very long time. Abilify worked cuz it didn’t have any major side effects but I had severe insomnia on it and I swear something was wrong with my bladder while taking it urinary retention or something but I never got it checked out. Even on sedating sleep meds I would be to sedated to be up for more than 12 hours a day on average but always felt absolutely exhausted and could only barely sleep. Vraylar is the best one for me so far. Very few side effects and now I can actually sleep and am typically only in bed the right amount of time which is 8-10 hours a night. I think I could even handle a busy job on this Med
I too am an inexpensive drug I doesn’t make me comfortable to be on something this expensive but the patent is coming off of this invega sustenna may of 2019 so hopefully it will be less expensive and not that long of time I also get extra help so I don’t pay all that much either
Doctors should probably start with the generics in case one day you get cutoff disability. All four of my meds are generic. I could survive in an emergency if I get cutoff. Obviously if the expensive ones are the only one’s that work. You have to use it.
Zyprexa, 4 boxes per month, costs 440€, not to mention the other two aps.
So pdoc prescribed generic zyprexa which I take it for free with insurance
I’m on clopixol $15 per month. It’s a typical AP with few side effects - for me anyhow.
I hate to think what my meds cost.
@Om_Sadasiva, are you on three AP’s? Like me?
Yep. 80mg zyprexa, 60mg abilify, 50mg haldol.
@anon12381882 , im taking shots of Invega sustenna 234mg every 4weeks. been about 2 years now on this med. some side effects with this med, but they’ve lessened the longer I’ve taken it.
