Who keeps pets? or wants to

i’ve been up all night, i cant sleep for this and that reasons. so i thought i’d try posting something conversational because why not
personally i keep a ball python. he is sweet and silly and very easy to care for most of the time, except when he’s being a picky eater
what kind of pet do you have, or would have ideally

Ew a snake. I could never have a snake. Too creepy for me. Glad he is yours. I have two cats and two diamond doves. They cuddle and feel warm when I pick them up. What will you do with it when it is 10 feet long?

I have five goldfish, which I love watching. Ideally I would like a cat, but my husband doesn’t want one, so we settled on the fish. I used to keep budgies, but they kept on dying, I don’t know why, so I thought fish would be better.

I have a dog and two cats. One cat gets along great with my dog, and the other freaks out if she is in the same room with him. I wish I knew how to stop her from being afraid of him. I tried giving her more space so she would feel more secure, but so far it hasn’t worked.

actually he will likely only get 4 feet long, 6 AT MOST and thats years away. i will cuddle him just as much, he is warm and squishy and enjoys settling down in soft warm places. i love cats too but allergies of my room mate are a restriction sadly. i never heard of doves as a pet but i guess it can be!

i also had a budgie but she died :frowning: it was sad

Two black and white shorthair cats with thumbs and a Shepard/.terrier mix and a harehound/shepard-terrier mix (the puppy of the former)

They’re cool but the Shepard terrier has PTSD and does crazy ■■■■ like growl and bark for no reason

Who knew snakes are hypoallergenic. I would. Still be scared of him. They dont have expressions so how do you know what he is thinking .

There is a cat in our home. I am starting to suspect she keeps me as a pet given how well she has trained me.

I’ve kept probably around 100 different snakes throughout my life. My favorite was an Emerald Tree Boa when it comes to looks and beauty. The worst? Probably that damn Burmese Python that bit me on the hand and tried to eat me! If you ever find yourself being bit by a snake that won’t let go or is being aggressive, pour 80-proof alcohol into its mouth. It produces a burning sensation to the snake (duh), without causing any physical damage. That Burm that bit me ate rabbits. I had to go to a special reptile store and procure the rabbits there. They snapped their necks in the back of the store. That was a big factor is getting rid of that snake - I didn’t want to kill any more bunnies.

Counting in-laws?!?

That would have done it for me, too. While I appreciate my cat’s skills as a mouser, the dismembered parts she left on my workout equipment I could have done without. Thankful that our current domicle doesn’t have a rodent issue. Some pretty gross stuff goes hand-in-hand with owning a predator.

i have a mali uromastyx and a bearded dragon. i’m not allowed to have snakes where i live now. my partner and mother in law are terrified of them. i also have angel fish in a freshwater tank. i had some mystery sails but they died. i also take care of my in laws’ dog, a shih tzu.

Nope. The in-laws are more along the lines of a pit viper.

WOAH thats alot! ive considered getting a burmese one day but i dont think ill ever have the space/dedication for that kind of thing. ive heard its recommended to have one person present for every meter of snake anyway and that likely wont happen either lol

its ok you dont have to like snakes, but you dont need to try to make me scared. ive done my research so i know how to care for and handle him safely. im not really a bird person, but to each their own

I have two guinea pigs. Might get a third soon and separate the pair that are caged together at the moment because the older pig keeps biting and threatening the smaller one - she’s apparently very territorial. I didn’t like them much at first but they are actually adorable pets and very low maintenance.

Our neighbor’s cat has adopted us, as well, but that’s an informal arrangement and will eventually end. Which is sad, because I really love him.

I wish I could get a dog. I miss having a dog so much. But my apartment complex wouldn’t allow the pigs and a dog.

@cj9556, I just introduced a little kitty I found tossed out on the street (literally) to my 17 year old kitty and 4 kitty siblings that are 5 year old now by tossing them all in the same room and petting the new one at the same time as the old(er) ones.
It took about 2 weeks for the kitten to stop hissing and puffing up- hilarious when it makes the 22lb cat back down.

The oldest one tolerates the kitten now, but it took quite a few years of contact with each other before she gave in and became friendly with them.

The more they are exposed in close quarters, the faster they get used to each other…it can take time, but it will happen.
The more space between them, the longer it takes.

My cats have always been indoor cats. While I have never been presented with dead rodents as gifts, they’ve still exhibited gifting behavior. If I sleep in they will leave socks outside the door. They find them somewhere and carry them upstairs and leave them for me.

I have a nice red cat. His name is Ryzhik. He is old enough - 10 yrs. old. I like it that he often comes to my lap and starts to purr))

How do you get them to stay in the same room? When I locked them in the laundry room together, she just hid on the shelves for a couple days. She scratches anyone who tries to put her in a place where the dog can reach her.
