Which should i grow? potatoes or cabbage (poll)

so for the most part I know what im going to grow in my veggie garden this spring, summer and fall. I have 5 raised beds at the moment, here is what I have planned for them

  1. kale and mustard greens
  2. romaine lettuce
  3. hot peppers and onions
  4. tomatoes and carrots
    5.??

so which should I grow in my last raised bed potatoes or cabbage?

  • potatoes of some kind
  • cabbage

Why not both? Cabbage is good with potatoes in it. And some sausage or a ham bone.

I would like to grow both, but I don’t think I have enough space, so im leaning towards potatoes. potatoes and cabbage are good together, in fact I had some tonight. anyways, I can only do one or the other this year, next year I may expand my garden some more if I have the extra money. I would like to eventually have an additional 8 more beds for food, and Im also considering a smoke garden, with herbs to smoke that would calm me down. all that would be in my front yard in front of my house.

I only eat cabbage a few times a year, I guess I would consume more of it though if I grew 100 heads.

Potatoes are more versatile and you can store them easy. It’s not uncommon for folk here to store potatoes in their sheds all winter

You already have kale and romaine so I’d do potatoes

haha I grew sweet potatoes once. they were started for me, there was only one guy in Cincinnati selling them I remember. I don’t think they are typically grown here though. I do love sweet potatoes though.

My favorite meal is Cajun Boiled Dinner. I don’t know if that’s really a thing but that’s what I call it. Like NewE England boiled dinner but without the corned beef.

Boil some potatoes and sausage for about 30 minutes with a lot of Cajun seasoning and then add cabbage and boil another 10 minutes.

Serve with corn bread and black eyed peas.

Yummy for my tummy.

Whatever grows best where you live.

How about corn? Fresh corn on the cob is so much better than store bought.

I may grow some sweet corn in the future. but I don’t digest it very well. so I don’t eat a lot of corn, i’ll have corn on the cob a couple times a year, as well as popcorn on occasion or corn tostitos, but really I don’t eat a lot of it. that’s why im mostly growing salad greens. lots of people around here do grow predominantly sweet corn or tomatoes though. I can get it pretty cheap at farmer’s markets, so I don’t know if its worth the effort to grow it myself.

You can grow potatoes in a barrel, look it up. It’s really cool!

My dad always had a lot of luck growing bell peppers. He tried growing asparagus but they grew too thin and tough. How about trying to grow cantaloupes, honeydew melons or watermelons or strawberries?
