Sure, I have lulls in my symptoms. Sometimes the symptoms let up and are not so intense. The symptoms definitely vary in how strong they are or how much they interfere with what I’m doing.
Some people might just jump to the conclusion if they have a good day or week or month, that they are “cured” or that from now on they are going to feel a lot better for a long time. But don’t count on your symptoms staying away forever, It ain’t that easy.
If you want to talk about a long term relapse I would guess that the recovery rate would be diferent for each individual and speaking from experience, I had a relapse but it’s hard to pinpoint exactly when it started and what led up to it and when it ended.
When I relapsed in 1988 after being stable for about 5 years, my estimate was that from beginning to end it lasted about a year. But a lot happened in my life in that year. My relapse was probably caused by stress and drug addiction, and part of it was probably caused by unexplainable facets of anybody living with schizophrenia. During that year, I was mostly unemployed which contributed to the relapse. I moved around a lot, I was poor, the drug lifestyle could get crazy at times. All factors. And I hate to discourage anyone but I was on medication steadily for years before the relapse, during the relapse and after the relapse to the present. That’s schizophrenia. But except for a short time three years ago when my mom died and I got suicidal and got hospitalized for two days, I had not been hospitalized or relapsed from 1989-2015.
Last time I relapsed was in 2015. It only lasted a couple of days. I was given enough meds to put me right back into remission.
