What meds are you on?

I’m on ability but just found out that it causes impulsive sexual side effects for some and it just clicked that’s what’s been going on with me for a long time now. I now want to switch to a different antipsychotic. What are you on and what are your side effects? Know risperdol gives me terribly side effects but I have not tried anything other than that and abilify. Also looking for a non narcotic anxiety med.

I take zyprexa. It works well for me but we’re all different. It’s reknowned for it’s weight gain but if you eat smart and exercise you can avoid a bit of that. It is better for me than abilify and risperdal but they are the only ones I’ve tried.

We’re all different so it’s hard to say what’ll work but it’s worth a try.

Thank you for the suggestion! I’ve gained a ton of weight since being on ability so kinda use to that part.

Yes! On abilify I can’t control my impulses! I also have a very short attention span. Its totally debilitating.

Risperdal is okay if you can get past eps. It has also been known to cause other side effects like weight gain and hyperprolactinemia. Which is very unpleasant, you feel sluggish and depressed and sexually unable.

Yes I have no control. It is literally making me feel like a bad person because I just leave my husband to watch the kids so I can masturbate and I masturbate every chance I get. My thoughts are darker sexually. I can’t even talk to my husband about it because I’m ashamed

You can talk about it with your doctor, is it a male or a female? If your doctor is the same sex as you this talk may be easier. My doctor is very open, he asks me if I masturbate and so on. He is even willing to listen to me talk about my sexual intrusive thoughts. Open a dialogue, professionals are supposed to know how to talk about these things. They won’t laugh at you or treat you different. Some of the things I told my pdoc were quite dark, yet he has probably seen worse.

Thank you. Unfortunately my doctor switches almost every time I go there but I recently got married so I am switching docs anyways. Just going to get it all out my first visit lol.

Well I currently take Risperdal which you say you don’t like. I was taking Zyprexa in 2011 and came down with diabetes. My doctor said Zyprexa doesn’t cause diabetes but it’s like ice cream. If you’re diabetic you don’t take it. I’m doing fine on Risperdal and don’t seem to have any side effects.

I don’t think theres any medication to suppress hypersexuality, but there’s always the option of changing the offending med. so consider it, and your life may be better and more stable on another med.

I had horribly akathesia on it. I could not control my body for long periods of time.

Thanks for all the advice. Good to know someone can relate

Paliperidone 100mg injection. I haven’t been on it long, my side effects are now lessening. But they are aching feet and legs (pretty much gone) and some restless legs.

My mensutral cycle seems a bit messed up too on it. It was very late. I thought it was going to have stopped altogether on it.

I’m on abilify, my side effects are social anxiety, attention deficit, impulsiveness, akathisia, weight gain and possibly tardive dyskinesia.

A non narcotic anxiety med I think is called buspirone or buspar. Check it out.

Sorry to hear that @Saywhaat.

I could not sleep and i bought allegy meds from over the counter. They make me sleepy and they work.

I asked my doc if i could take allegy meds if i dont have allegy? She sayd yes. Cause that allegy med has antihistamines in it and antihistamines are also used as sleep medication.

I am on the free meds. Meaning, no meds at all.

I’m on olanzapine and sertraline which help with my paranoia and depression but do nothing for my negative symptoms or sleep. As far as side effects go I’v been quite lucky, only some weight gain but i’m not over weight.

You can try haldol. The only side effects I got from it was weight gain. You could also try propanalal for anxiety.

I’m on Saphris for an AP, Buspirone for anxiety, and Diazepam for a PRN. I am sluggish and slow-thinking. I can’t always remember words, and I feel stupid because I can’t think straight. I don’t know things anymore, and it’s embarassing because my family goes on and on about how well educated I am (I’m the only one in my family with degrees), but I don’t know anything. I don’t know if that’s sza or the meds.

Saphris can cause cognitive slowing, same woth valium. It could also be the illness itself, if so not many options for reversing that. Have you been dealing with it for years? If so it may be more like a chronic condition and less like a state. I also deal with slow processing speed, however it has improved as I have decreased my dose of abilify. Now I can type on the forum consistently, before I was unable to come up with words quickly and consistently. Still I’m sluggish sleeping something like 16 hrs a day. Life on psych meds is complicated (or simple?) isn’t it?
