What is the difference between illusion and delusion?

I can Google but I find persons here are good at explaining things and I want to get a variety of thoughts on this.

To me they are very different. I can’t explain why but anyone illusion seems like it describes false perception in everyday life.

I had illusions everyday for 14 years, several years ago. They came in the form of messages I found in mostly books but also magazines, Bibles, hymnals, coffee cups, posters, etc…etc… Basically anywhere the written word could be found. I perceived these messages as coming from God Himself. Often, I perceived them as coming from Satan. These messages were speaking directly to me personally. They addressed my personal thoughts, beliefs, fears, concerns, problems, wishes, situations, etc…etc… They would guide, direct, comfort, console, counsel, chastise, etc… and often insult, scold, threaten and reprimand etc…

In psychiatry, these are called delusions of reference or ideas of reference. But the words on the page that I saw were illusions because I supposedly misinterpreted the words. @mangojuice

An illusion means deception. A delusion means self-deception

Illusion is inflicted by one individual on others.

Delusion is self-inflicted.

I think I know the difference or definition, but I might not be 100 percent accurate. I always thought of delusion as meaning something made up like Lewis Carroll created Alice in Wonderland. A delusion would be that we are all living in Alice and Wonderland, or Lewis Carrols story itself is a sort of “delusion” as in fantasy but delusion is when you cant separate fantasy ie a made up story and your beliefs or reality ie belief that the real world is Wonderland and you are not really you–you’re alice.

Illusion to me always seemed to mean something that seems a lot like one thing and is similar but not exactly the same as something different or separate. So an illusion is the inability to discern between the two separate things. Like here is an instance: My name Gabrielle is an illusion–Gabrielle is just a word–its not a physical thing–its something I identify with an attach to my personality. Gabrielle means “Angel” in some places and depending on your culture–a name can be the symbol or illusion of something that represents different things and is/means distinctively different things to different people.

I also think of illusion as meaning false name or false label given the appearance of one thing that isnt the same as what it truly is. Like maybe the color yellow is the illusion of sunshine, but not technically the fire/rays of the sun? I hope that made any sense.

An illusion is when I think pretty girls are checking me out. A delusion is thinking pretty girls are checking me out and they like me.
