what is the course material…and is it difficult…what subjects do they study
I think you can go into any kind of nursing after you get your degree.
Paging @Anna
You can’t just do psych nursing. You have to go to full blown generic nursing school. Psych is one of the courses you take in it and you do a psych clinical, but you will also take a class and clinical for obgyn, ICU/ER, med/surg, etc. Basically they give you basic education and training in all the major specialties. When you graduate you then choose which field you want to go into for yourself.
You also take courses such as anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, and other health related science courses. Many nursing programs also require you take biology and chemistry beforehand.
Nursing school is challenging. I was a neuroscience major beforehand and it was not as hard as my first degree content wise. But it was no walk in the park thats for sure.
hi @Anna…were the placements for psychiatric nursing difficult…i imagine it must be tough to do those placements…are you thrown in at the deep end
also do you feel more enlightened about psychology and the nature of the mind when youve done psych nursing
Try putting @ before Anna’s name so she gets that question you just asked
thanks for the heads up @LilyoftheValley
As I said there is no school for psychiatric nursing. There is just nursing school. Yes getting into nursing school is challenging, it is competitive. I got waitlisted 2 times before being accepted to my program.
You can be a psych nurse and not understand anything about psych aside from what the basic diagnoses are and meds are for it. You decide how much you want to understand. Some nurses don’t give a crap. I have a deep understanding of psych because I have lived it myself having mental illness and because I have researched it since I was 13, taken numerous courses in it throughout my education, and due to knowing and speaking with numerous other people with mental illness.
You’re smart and hardworking Anna! I hope to be like you some day.
