At what age are men/women typically diagnosed?
I don’t know off the top of my head but that is an easy one to look up. I know that men are generally diagnosed earlier than women. I think it’s something like 20 for men and 30 for women on average…let me check
" Men and women are equally likely to get this brain disorder, but guys tend to get it slightly earlier. On average, men are diagnosed in their late teens to early 20s. Women tend to get diagnosed in their late 20s to early 30s. People rarely develop schizophrenia before they’re 12 or after they’re 40."
Thank you for doing that, I appreciate it!
My second pdoc told me that Men with schizophrenia tend to do better after they turn 40, and that Women with schizophrenia tend to do worse after they turn 40. But keep in my mind these are just trends, not guarantees.
Did the doctor say why women do worse after 40?
No, I never asked. This was during the height of my psychosis when I was put in the mental health facility for 5 months (17 years ago), I just remember being happy to hear that because I am a guy. I’m in my 40’s now and doing better than ever, but I’m also on a different med than I was back then too.
That explains a lot.
If it’s ok to ask, we’re you diagnosed after 40?
I had many diagnoses that were wrong before SZA, bipolar. The first psychotic episode I can remember having was when I was 19. I didn’t get diagnosed until I was 47. I’m almost 49 now.
My pdoc fed ma a similar load of tripe: “typically sza symptoms tend to lessen the older a person gets.” Reeeeealy? I’m 57, when do I reach that magic age?
Ooo, I’m 37 and a woman, and I’ve felt like my sza has gotten worse over the years. More meds added on, etc. But at least they help!
It’s assumed it has to do with sex hormones.
But overall, women have a prognosis that is a lot better than for men. It is also less common in women. And they develop it later, on average. All of this is probably related.
Some women do get very severe schizophrenia, of course. But most of them are less affected than men and do better.
23 years old here. Went from psychotic depression to sza within a year and has been my solid dx for 1.5 decades.
