What do you think about the possibility of cognitive therapy for schizophrenia, see the book summary
If you are talking about CBT then I’m sceptical. Plenty of research out there to show it does little for positive symptoms and can worsen negative ones.
I think that therapy can help anyone if they actually use it. I sat through many CBT therapy sessions but never really tried using it in my life. Do I think it would control symptoms of schizophrenia? No, but it would help anyone to better manage their life and choices in general.
I actually used cognitave behavioral therapy for about two years I had a whole kit from the midwest stress center. It actually worked REALLY well. Of course it doesn’t cure the symptoms of schizophrenia but it helped me to function better in the world and manage my emotional response to my hallucinations.
Exactly. My CBT in no way cured Sz. But that moment when I’m starting to become panicked… do I give in to that panic and act on a panic impulse? Or do I step back, reach for some calm logic somewhere in my mind and act upon calm logic?
It didn’t cure my Sz but it taught me how to make better choices.
i am doing cbt, it is not helping my sz…but it is having a dramatic effect on my ocd…ptsd…depression…etc.
but you have to want to do it and you have to want to heal !?!
i would highly recommend it, it has been so far a miracle for me.
i should add though it is not easy, it has made me feel like totall rubbish, suicidal, more depressed etc…
it is not to be taken lightly…i hit rock bottom…but it is worth it.
take care
i’ve done a lot of cbt for agoraphobia, which developed from my having schizophrenia, but it only helps me if i’m overall not actively dealing with too many voices/certain thoughts consuming.
the more i’ve “analysed” my thoughts and the voices and done the “looking realistically” element of cbt and the exposure parts, the less it’s been good for me, i’d say. that seems what i’m interested in doing and what’s been most therapeutically useful with respect to positive symptoms seems to be the opposite. certainly when they’re most pressingly happening, but also generally.
