What causes depersonalisation (spacing out) and what cures it

what causes depersonalisation and what cures it. The reason I ask is I suffer from it and don’t know how to treat it.

I would guess some kind of anxiety. I don’t know. I think if you’re just patient with yourself it will go away.

Mine will hit with stress and anxiety.

I haven’t found a cure.

Sometimes it’s a hard struggle to stay grounded.

I got dr/dp after smoking a joint. I got struck by a massive panic attack after smoking it and a few days later i got really bad derealization and depersonalization. It was mostly derealization. It was pure hell for 3 months, nothing seemed real. Then it started getting SLOWLY better after 3 months and it totally disappeared after 12 months. I´ve been completely normal now for 2 years without any signs of drpd. Im sure you´ll get over it. Its anxiety that causes it. I always was an anxious person, i had social anxiety since i can remember.

What helped me the most is accepting the feeling and live it. Like this is how i feel, i accept it and i refuse to bother me. This is how i started getting normal and at the end overcame that nasty feeling that i had for a year.

I think depersonalization can be caused by new exposure to unfamiliar environments. It is a sort of culture shock to the brain. It could be due to stress too and bad habits. Drugs can cause depersonalization. I don’t drink much and I don’t depersonalize as much now. Medications can also cause a feeling of derealization. I called it dysphoria that’s how I felt often on certain medications. There is a serious disconnect, or wound, that can cause this symptom. People who have been traumatized experience it.

The cure is in self-affirmation, connection between space and time, in locating the self and source of happiness or moods. In schizophrenia, the negatives and positives reap a toll on the body and brain. I would consider it also an issue of holistic resonance. If you’re disgusted by an experience, but feel at odds to change them or yourself because they control you–a sense of powerlessness in society. Being responsible helps. Learning self-control, and also Taosim–going with the flow, riding the wives until they settle. People experience it in different ways.

Don’t try to swim upstream if it’s going to make you drown. Find shelter.

Mental and Physical Grounding techniques help. Like:

  1. My name is___. I live at ___. The date is ___. I am seated in ___ room. I AM IN A SAFE PLACE. (repeat as necessary)
  2. Name all the objects that you can identify in the room.
  3. Identify any color that you can see in the room.
  4. How many chairs are there?
  5. Focus on a picture and describe it in great detail.
  6. Focus on a piece of writing and spell all the words in reverse.
  7. Notice how many breaths you take in one minute?
  8. Touch the seat of the chair you are in and focus on the way it feels. feel your body grounded in the seat.
  9. Focus on your feet, which are grounded on the floor. What kind of floor is it? What does it feel like beneath your feet?

When I blank out and stare into space, its as if my thoughts and mind have temporarily shut down. I think its maybe because of overload of the thoughts, but I wouldn’t know how to cure it as I had it practically my whole life. Maybe practising mindfulness? (DBT therapy which I learned about in hospital) but that’s hard to do until you practise it long.

I get this too… my mind racing so fast… I can’t think what to do next. It seems like only half thoughts seem to fully form… That is when I’m motionless and frozen, not knowing what to do next.

When I float out of my body… not feeling attached… watching myself from the outside… I’m still in motion… but I can’t seem to make myself stop what I’m doing. It’s the strangest out of personal control feeling since I can see and hear what is going on. I just can’t seem to get back into my body.

Sometimes I feel like it is a way of de-stressing. For me it isn’t usually scary, unless I attach past bad memories to it or think bad thoughts. If I am just blanking out staring into space it relaxes my mind.

I will experience derealization - spaciness usually after a stressful event - like a big social event/ family gatherings where there is a lot of people.
It does not happen all of the time - but happens to me quite often.
It goes away on its own

I have spaced out my whole life, at times I’m grounded better than others, but I’m 50 years old, and I still deal with it.
Stick me in an unfamilliar situation, and there had better be someone to hold my hand to make my way back home.
I simply shut down and I’m done.

i got derealization after my apandictomy surgery i think do to antibiotics that they gave me at hospital i had stress and anxiety because of my abdominal pain before surgery does my derealization have anything to do with having sz?

Hi, ayrin. My understanding is that schizophrenia is a diagnosis of exclusion, meaning that if your symptoms are due to something else, including a medication reaction, then you are not diagnosed as schizophrenic. You may still have psychosis, and the treatment may be similar to that for schizophrenia, but unless your symptoms cannot be accounted for by other reasons, it’s not schizophrenia.

If your symptoms persist after the trigger disappears, then perhaps a doctor may revise. But you should talk to your doctor about this. No one here has any ability to diagnose you.

Stress or anxiety typically causes it. You can lower your stress by practicing slow belly breathing. Here is a video on it: (anti-anxiety medications can also help if the breathing doesn’t).

This is because when we are stressed we tend to breath quick and shallow breaths and this accentuates the stress. The slower belly breathing helps to destress your body.
