Hi everyone. I’ve been looking at good sources. Finland very rarely applies antipsychotics. They use a therapy based on open dialogue with the patient, among other things. They rarely give medication. They say that with the Finnish method they manage to reduce psychosis and even cure it. I don’t know if anyone was aware of this news.
It doesn’t work. If it was that simple then therapy would solve everything and it clinically doesn’t do much for psychosis.
Psychosis is a real disorder and talking about it isn’t going to solve it. Medications on the other hand do real things to improve the whole process. We are a pro medications website simply because it works for the community.
What Finnish method? I have never heard of it.
The only thing we have to combat this illness is meds.
The mental health care I’ve received since I got sick sucked because I got no therapy just drugs. I started therapy after I’d been ill 9 years. I was eager to talk when I first got sz but nobody talked to me it was just take this drug take that drug. At the state hospital on the adolescent ward we did have a lot to do and I resolved some things with art therapy.
I think that one needs to get stabilized before one can receive talk therapy. But talk therapy is expensive and takes time.
I agree that educating about this illness is important to get better understanding what it means to suffer from a psychotic illness. I had to do my own research about it online. I didn’t know anything about this affliction. I was desperate! I found this forum, talked to nurses and read a few homepages about Sz.
Later on when I was stable I got medical information from my treatment team.
The most saddening part was to realize that I will have to take meds for the rest of my life and that I probably never will be cured. But it’s something I had to accept.
Thats not true. My previous therapist helped me through many crises.
I wasn’t so I read this article, my opinion psychosis can only be dealt with by meds but what I agree with is about stress trauma life events that have an effect on mental illness and when fixed or taken away can have some benefits, for me I asked my doctor about psychology again and they said it’s not going to benefit my illness, but I’m stopping meds soon and without the stressful life problems from the past fixed I don’t have to deal with anymore I hope I can cope and having people to talk to is good but there is no cure for schizophrenia
The evidence base for it is very weak, even after 30 years. That speaks volumes to me as to its therapeutic worth.
Happy cake day @firemonkey !
Thank you.2022…
Thank you all. I didn’t even know it was cake day. Nor that it coincides with my daughter’s birthday.
It is unfortunate that we have to take medicine for the rest of our lives but there are accounts of the elderly mentally ill going off their medicine successfully. I myself am on very little medicine. I used to be on quite a lot for many years and I was starving and sleeping too much. Now my pdoc sees that as a health risk, staying in bed too much and being morbidly obese. It’s been three months now and I’m doing better on only 10 mg zyprexa, 2 mg Valium, 30 mg propranolol. I just had my Lexapro discontinued. So maybe your future is not that unfortunate. I’m 52 years old and suffer from far less symptoms than 25 years ago. I’m like a lot of people here who have become skeptical. Metaphysical matters are no concern to me. They are all right for some but poison for others. But I have one or two strange beliefs:. I believe sometimes people who are close can be telepathic. But things like that may only happen once in a lifetime. No sense in getting wrapped up in it.
Well I have not seen that news, but from my own experience I can say that I have used two antipsychotic meds more than over one decade.
This Finnish method is already applied in 18 countries according to the note I read
Same here, but it turns out that no one wanted to spend days upon end listening to ALIENS COLONIZATION NANOBOT IMPLANTS MORE ALIENS BLAH BLAH. My conversational topics were limited at the time.
From reading a bit about it, it seems the studies are of low quality and that they need proper studys to show its effective.
I remember my first psychosis, no one could talk me out of what was happening.
Scientology has similar approach and beliefs I think.
They don’t believe in psychiatry as it is with medication etc
I think they believe in therapy , clearing n healing by a person or group of people giving their time to help person through it.
If I’m having insomnia at anxiety I want imovane.
My psychiatrist I had could have been a Scientologist since she wants me to come off imovane the only thing that helps me and saves me if I’m getting unwell.
Or probably not since she was so keen to prescribe seroquel that is addictive and has some hell side effects.
Medication can help why watch a person tortured and suffering when you should help them out of their torment with some good medication.
Yeah, same here. I can’t think of anything anyone could have said that could have helped me.
Maybe this psychology theraphy method could work in early onset sz. Not in the acute phase, but after medication has calmed a person. It sounds plausible that it would be easier to get off medications if a person got theraphy early on.
I don’t think the system is good enough, at least not where I live. They put me on a medication that neutralized me as a problem for society. And that was it. No follow up. No theraphy. No pdoc. Just a GP that had me monitored in case the AP gave me adverse side effects.
