Want Chinese food

But this month is kind of tough on cash. I know I shouldn’t but I have been thinking about it for days. I won’t do it. Just a stupid craving. :fried_shrimp::fortune_cookie::takeout_box:

I liked commercial Chinese food like shrimp toast, lemon chicken, and egg foo young while watching a cheap movie in college. Haven’t had junk food like that in years. Mmm.

It’s pretty cheap to make your own. Is that an option?

I have so little food in the house. Tomorrow I’m going shopping so I’ll pick some stuff up.

We’re really enjoying the Co-op market in the town we just moved to. Excellent selection and the prices aren’t bad. We’re trying to go every couple of days and poach deals. We’re used to having to go shopping in the city and then we bought too much and had some go bad. Don’t need as much with Squirrelette off to college. (Although she’s home this weekend is planning to shop in our pantry. Brat.)

I’m trying to be good about food waste… The bread that started to go stale was cut up into croutons, toasted in the oven, and tossed in some garlic butter for tonight’s salad.

I want to try that not actually Chinese, Chinese dish that Americans have called General Tso’s chicken. We don’t get it in the UK, it looks pretty good.

I thought about getting Chinese food yesterday but I opted for Mexican food instead. Hell, China and Mexico are only about 2000 miles apart so it’s basically the same thing.

Not had Chinese food in ages, things have slowed down here to, so money will be tight all winter by the looks of things, so no take out for now

I have been craving Kung Pao Tofu for about two months now. I don’t even want the rice, just the spicy tofu and peanuts. Yesterday I got an Amy’s Kitchen Chinese Noodles and Vegetable frozen meal just to take the edge off the craving! It had some tofu in it. We don’t have a good Chinese restaurant here in my city.

You should try Mexican Chinese food. It is delicious. One thing I have noticed is that in Mexico, Cantonese style Chinese food is far more common than Mandarin style Chinese food which seems to be more common place in the U.S. I enjoy both styles. I have noticed Cantonese cuisine seems to have more of a soy sauce (or oyster sauce) taste while Mandarin style has more of a steamed vegetables thing going on. Both are good in my opinion.

There was a documentary about it on Netflix a year ago or so. General Tso’s chicken is good when well prepared. It can be a little crispy and tastes similar to sweet and sour sauce without the tanginess. Some Chinese restaurants have a similar plate (around here at least) called House Special Chicken although it is usually more pricey. (House Special Prawns/Shrimp is also super good if well prepared)

Anyway, the documentary had two people who claimed to have prepared the first General Tso dish. If I remember correctly it first appeared somewhere around 1960. It was popularized two decades later. One of the claimants said he prepared it in San Francisco, while the other said he did so in Chinese Taipei/Taiwan. (Or some island off mainland China). In any case, General Tso’s chicken is indeed not a traditional Chinese dish and according to the documentary, it is not even popular in China. However, one thing of note is that both claimants were Chinese.

Hah here in the U.S. though it is a staple of Chinese restaurants. It is rare to find a Chinese restaurant that does not offer some variation of General Tso’s chicken. At least that is so on California. Some places have another similar plate called Orange Chicken. That one according to the documentary was found as a traditional meal in some provinces in China but the way it was prepared there was vastly different. Here it is a plate that has a sauce that tastes a little sweet sometimes they have slices of orange added. In China it was more like chicken with the actual fruit Orange/Mandarin. Just thought I’d share a little bit I learned about General Tso’s chicken from a documentary.

Hah but yeah, it’s not really Chinese food. It’s like Americanized Chinese food. A little bit like Nachos are Americanized Mexican food I guess.
