Volunteer work

A few weeks ago I got this leaflet that recruits volunteers to guide foreign tourists. It says they offer a two-day course but when I took a closer look, the dates were already expired. But they might recruit again.

This might be a good start for me. They don’t require much of foreign langage skills.

My worries are:

  1. If they accept schizophrenic volunteers
  2. If I could function
  3. When should I take this first step? I’ve challenged many times before and ended up failing. Everytime I thought I was ready for work, but actually wasn’t. So how to tell when?

Advice please.

Oh and my main symptom is fatigue.

Why would they be interested on your mental health?

They cannot discriminate
Volunteer work is really good I think
Start off small
There are lots of volunteer opportunities out there

Maybe moderate amount of stress is a good motivation. And find reasons why you need to work. (Oops sorry, I overlooked the word “volunteer”)
I presume they will have no idea what is schizophrenia, you may just tell them you have over-thinking or over-imagining habit. It is much easier to tell someone I have schizoaffective than schizophrenia because mood disorder is more acceptable.

Foreign tourist guide? Is it in English?
You will need to know well about places to visit, food and culture. And, public speaking? :hushed:

I don’t know. They might just wonder what I do and ask what my job is, and if I answer I have no job, they would think there’s something wrong with me. Because people can’t be out of work without a reason.

People in your country don’t discriminate people with schizophrenia/mental illness in general?

In my country Japan, people finally started to understand physically disabled people just for 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

@bananatto they won’t ask if you have mental illness so there’s no reason to disclose. I wouldn’t disclose even if they asked. It’s not a paying job and it’s none of their business. Start learning about all the local attractions to prepare. that’s what I’d do.

What if you answer that you are a hikikomori?

Yeah I don’t want to think too much about things that have nothing to do with the work itself.

I guess I have no problem with talking with people or understanding different cultures but I have little knowledge on transportations/places to visit. For the last few years I’ve visited many places around my city, which might help a bit. I used to stay home all day due to negative symptoms so I have little experiences. I want to catch up.

I guess that would be worse, lol, and it’s not accurate.

It’s a good idea to go online and start looking up things to see in your area, and then going there and learning all you can. It’ll help you to already know the attractions.

Don’t mention your mental health to them. Just try it out for one day, or even several hours. If you feel that you can’t continue, just let them know. All the best

haha sorry I wanted to know how it was regarded in Japan…
Anyways why have you to be completely honest with them?

The reason why I want to work is because I want to stop receiving benefits. As long as I receive benefits they won’t allow me to travel overseas. I just want to travel overseas.

If I don’t want to travel, I wouldn’t have much reason to work because I prefer to be alone.

If I’m good at lying, I’d lie.
I never want to tell them my health issues it’s private

Maybe I’d better learn how to lie as a means of healthy living

I don’t think you would need big lies, only half truths… you could say that you are very ‘anxious’ or that your family needed you…

I’ve been learning about my city which was personal at first, and got some books/magazines on restraunts/attractions/history. I also love to learn about different cultures.

Online is good too. I’ll visit more places next year.

You’ll be perfect for the job then.
