For me it has helped with intrusive thoughts, calming the mind, and helps considerably.

But I use it in conjunction with anti psychotic, B3 on it’s own is most likely not effective.

Really should’t be dosed more than 500mg(Niacin) daily as it can possibly damadge the liver at high doses. If you use niacinamide version of B3 you could go 1000mg daily as it is less toxic for the liver. Also niacinamide doesen’t give unpleasant flushing as opposed to niacin.

You should ask your doctor about this though, keep them informed.

Niacin (vitamin b3) was touted as a cure for schizophrenia. It’s been completely discredited and does nothing for schizophrenia.

I came off meds because I believed the YouTube videos about b3. I just ended up psychotic in hospital :hospital:.

A high dose of b3 can damage your liver.

Yea, I tried it and supposedly schizophrenics don’t get the flush. Let me tell you, even a half dose flushed the hell out of my skin. Not sure mega dosing this stuff would be tolerable as it burns pretty badly.

I’m going to guess that B3 became a thing because of things pellagra are Vitamin deficiencies causing diseases presentations in early psychiatric asylums.

I saw papers that there is an abnormal skin flush response. It could be possible that there is a small subset of population that are deficient as part of scz but me stating that is completely unfounded and I don’t even really believe it myself.

Taking b3 for might improve general health and wellbeing. Don’t expect anything for scz.

But B3 wasn’t used as monotherapy for sz. I have dr abraham hoffers book.

There were two different stacks proposed. One if the patient had histapenia(high copper, low histamine) or histadelia(too much histamine). Also there was the issue of pyrrole disorder.

For example the stack for histapenia is comprised of:

Niacin 100-3000mg
Folic acid 1-2mg
Zink 10-30mg
Manganese 15-50mg
Lithium carbonate 300-900mg
Tryptophan 1000mg
B12 1 injection pr week
Vitamin C 2gram
Molybden 500mcg

I never tried the stacks as written, but I have borrowed some ideas from it.

Also keep in mind this stack was administered before a AP had been introduced as a first line treatment.

Also I’m thinking back in the 50’s people had simpler and more monotonous lives impression wise. Without the disturbance of internet and tv with social media, youtube, neverending information upon googling, not to mention porn.

Some people with sz might have been more susceptible to lighter treatment when there were less visual distractions around.

I’m only speaking anecdotal ofcourse. I don’t know if studies excist on this. At least for me having a sound relationship with media matters a lot as to the state of my mental health.

I took Niacin (Vitamin B3) for years hoping I would have a lighter case of schizophrenia. Apparently, it didn’t help in that regard.

This is probably in line with the thinking that mental disorders came from a nutrient deficiency, pre APs was also pre-dopamine hypothesis. I don’t think it has been proven niacin either works as an adjunctive or that there is a special population of schizophrenics who might otherwise benefit from niacin due to deficiency. I think getting the right levels are important but and I also take it for general health reasons but I don’t think that megadosing is going to help anyones scz.
