Two checks

Hi,

Hope you’re all well…
I wanted to talk to you about something.

I was cashed two checks, I can’t remember where or who. It frightens me.
I have all my other checks, but for several hours I have been looking to whom I could have written these checks to.
It is very stressful.
There is a check for 62 € and another for 74 €.
I haven’t lost my checkbook, it’s just two checks.
The bank asks for money to know the person who cashed the check …
:frowning: :frowning:

I phoned my dad about this, he tried to reassure me.

I have never seen a check in my life… Except in American movies. Sounds like a very tedious system.

It varies depending on the country. It’s cultural.

In France, checks are still often used. (of course less than credit card.).
In Germany, people often pay in cash.

The last explanation I got was that it was a result of underdeveloped banking systems. Pretty much everyone here switched to cards over three decades ago. I don’t think checks are an accepted form of payment anymore. And most banks don’t allow you to make deposits or payments any way except online and through apps (except in some very few centralized locations). That angered some of the elderly people here. But it was a waste of resources for the banks.

I just checked on the internet.
“La tribune” a swiss newspapper says that it’s mainly cultural.
In Great Britain, people use checks too.
UK banks (and french banks too.) are huge.
I don’t think this is due to a “underdevelopped banking system”.

By the way, credit cards exist in France since 1967.

Doesn’t the Bank have a copy of the check? They should be able to tell you whom it’s written to. The check is presented to them for payment, so they should know who it’s written to.

In Canada urban people generally don’t use cheques. Rural people use them a lot. Mrs. Squirrel kept trying to write cheques in the city when we first got married and was angry that no one wanted them, but she grew up on a farm and lived in small communities her entire life before we got married and moved to the capital city of our province. Took some effort to get her to stop picking fights with every store we went into and to just use a debit card instead.

Who were the checks addressed to? If you make an online account, you can view your transactions in the account. You’ll be able to see a picture of the check

Its going to be okay. Try distracting yourself. I got a fraudulent charge before, its very scary I know. But it will all work itself out!

Stores here are very, very reluctant to accept checks too.

Thanks Pianogal.
You’re probably right, but it’s a paid service. (15 to 30 €).
They take advantage of these situations to “extort” customers.

I’d find a new bank. Not one bank I’ve ever had charged me for going online and checking my transactions. I’ve had quit a few different banks over the years.

Although, I’m in the US. Maybe it’s different where you are

Actually, I can see online all of my transactions with details except checks.

Maybe…
I’ll be more careful next time !
Fortunately my checkbook is intact. It’s just two checks.
Thanks !

You could try thinking back to the last things you bought and that could help you remember who you wrote the check to.

Thank you @Leaf
That’s what I did. I also looked in my diary, but there’s nothing that matches with these checks…
I am a little less anxious now.
I think some stores I went broke up their credit card machine, so I had to do checks.
That is the only likely reason.
(Obviously it’s also possible that my checks were stolen, but I don’t think so.)

You’re fine. Everything’s fine. If you have your check book and everything is accounted for, then you obviously wrote and forgot about them. But keep an eye out for future charges.
