To the nurse who told me APs don’t cause weight gain

Don’t get me wrong I am pleased (my jeans were falling down lol) but this particular nurse was so mean to me years ago.

She used to do my clozapine bloods and when I stopped that med I didn’t see her for years. Bumped into her in the hospital years later and she is like,

‘You’ve put on the beef jim’ - first words to come out of her mouth. I am like well it was the meds and she is like bollocks the meds don’t cause weight gain.

Her whole tone betrayed her belief that folk who put on weight on APs have a weak character.

The " pines " all cause weight gain.

Even excersize and eating healthy dont work.

I threw the towel in long ago trying get thin on these meds.

Literally impossible

I gained alot of weight while on Seroquel and I was on it for 13 years. It was terrible.

Thanks, Risperidone, for the 60 gradual pounds I’ve still be unable to shed over 2 years later.

Some health care professionals have no clue. Imagine the public outcry if blood pressure meds caused this level of weight gain. But the AP taking population has a quiet voice

APs plus being older = weight gain.

I’ve managed to lose 30 pounds but can’t seem to lose more.

I gained 70 pounds since being on meds, granted some of that is muscle as ive been going to the gym a lot but a lot of it is not approved weight. So yes they gain enormous amount of weight

I’m losing weight all of the time on my APs. My doctor weights me every so often and encourages that I eat.

I gained weight mostly on risperidone. Now my weight is stable.

I told my psychologist that Risperidone made me gain weight and he looked at me like I was out of my mind. He then said Clozapine doesn’t make you gain weight.

My understanding is that clozapine and olanzapine are, in general, the 2 biggest weight gainers.

Not saying that’s true for everyone though. You eat a good balanced diet man. That should be applauded
