A new book, ‘The Psychobiotic Revolution’ , is being heralded across the world as a game changer in the field of biomedicine.
For the last 14 years APC scientists Professor John Cryan, Chair of the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience at University College Cork (UCC) and Ted Dinan, Professor of Psychiatry at the University, have worked to establish the gut-brain connection.
I hear a lot about PRObiotics and never really looked into that. So don’t really understand it much.
PREbiotics contribute to a healthy gut, apparently.
I strongly believe in a connection between gut and mental health.
When I eat unhealthily, my symptoms flare up. The few times I took antibiotics, I immediately got both severe gut problems and severe mental health problems (psychosis, anxiety, depression).
I took probiotics for a while, but it didn’t feel good. I now aim for a healthy diet. It’s one of my goals to change this the next month. I think this is the most natural way to change you gut and mental health. I don’t expect it to be a cure-all, but I do think it helps. I have actually heard and read of people curing mental health problems by switching their eating patterns. I think this should be a much bigger point of attention in psychiatry.
When I told my psychiatrists that I wanted attention for things like therapy, diet, exercise too they laughed in my face and wrote it to the judge as a proof I lacked insight. Idiots. :-/
Probiotics…well, some say they help, some say they harm, I don’t know. But I felt bad on them, so I quit. Might do wonders for someone else.
And uhm…you agree with my ex-doctors? Why?? Nobody in my surroundings (even my current doctor) agrees with them.
Do you truly believe someone who has traumarelated psychosis and self-destructive behaviour who asks for traumatherapy and help in finding a healthier lifestyle, diet, a good home, etc… lacks insight? I truly don’t get such thinking…
I think it is sheer idiocy from both doctor and patient to pump someone full of high doses of meds and in the meanwhile do nothing about the underlying issues that perpetuate their mental health problems. If someone is traumatized, almost homeless, addicted, has a fastfood diet, no job, little social contacts, etc…of course they feel bad. Why on earth would it be lack of insight to ask for help in solving such issues? Of course you can get happier and mentally healthier if you solve them! That doesn’t mean everything is curable in such a way… but imho it is a lack of insight to do nothing about it.
And it is total arrogance to laugh in someones face if they ask for help with their traumas and lifestyle.
I’ve heard those issues in children can cause mental illness maybe not immediately,
but in adulthood,
but I’ve never heard it in adults, but that doesn’t mean you’re not right.
I just worry you’ll feel so healthy physically, you’ll go off your meds,
and I don’t think your current doctor is being completely honest with you.
Just a wide variety of foods, you can become over vitamined, and that can cause cancer, in my opinion, no stats on that, but I’ve seen it in my family with strict diet.
Hey, there is actually research showing peoples mental health can get better or worse from things like diet or trauma treatment. That doesn’t mean all issues are solved… it’s just a part of the puzzle. But I feel lots happier if I eat well, and horrible with too much coffee, for example.
Thanks for your worry. I will be very cautious with meds. If I ever withdraw, I’ll do it in the tiniest steps, while monitoring my psychotic symptoms closely and being real open with the pdoc. And perhaps I’ll never withdraw.
My current team are quite honest, really. They think I should be careful with withdrawing from meds, but also plan to offer other things, like EMDR, therapy and hopefully guidance with healthy living.
I also think being too radical about things like diet is not good… just eating healthily is better. Sorry that you saw such things in your family.
Oh, I’m so sorry! You never know what caused it, but it’s so sad!
I used to be into all sorts of supplements, but I threw nearly all of them away. I think a normal healthy diet is better than bottles full of supplements. You don’t really know what they do, what side effects they cause.
I think that taking supplements is just as much a pain in the behind as taking meds. You have to remember to go to the supp store and stock up on them and then remember to take them on time etc. It’s time consuming and demanding of your attention so people don’t persist with these things unless their life depends on them.
