not sure if medications is the best place for this, but I’m pretty sure my meds cause this.
I only noticed it went i started risperdal consta depots. don’t remember if the pill form made me do it, dont think so. I’m on invega sustenna depot now.
basically I sometimes i get tooth pains sometimes from biting down too hard throughout the day. don’t mean when im eating, just all the time. I catch myself biting down too hard but I don’t really pay attention until my teeth start hurting. that’s when I know I’ve been doing it.
never seen this talked about, anybody else have jaw tightness and movements?
I take cogentin aka benztropine for side effects but I still do it pretty regularly.
I have an issue with clenching my jaw without noticing I’m doing it. Ended up buying mouth guards for it, but I keep forgetting to wear them. I don’t think my clenching is due to meds, though.
Talk to your doctor about this. Uncontrolled muscle movements can be a sign of TD, which is a rare but serious side effect of most antipsychotics. It’s probably not that. It’s more likely anxiety or something. But talk to your doctor.
I grind my teeth from anxiety. I compensate by wearing a mouth guard at night, and chewing gum all day. The gum cushions my teeth. Prior to making those changes, I cracked two teeth and needed almost 5k worth of work done.
i think youre probably right. I think it’s some kind of anxiety/quirky habit i have. sometimes I gently gnaw on my lips and cheeks to keep from damaging the teeth.
My jaw twitches and my top and bottom teeth all scrape against each other at same time and it does it pretty hard so it makes a noise.
I find it irritating, but I am not sure if it’s damaging my teeth or not.
I am on 30mg Abilify. I do take procyclidine 20mg a day to deal with my movement problems. My pdoc wanted to increase this drug, but I refused every thing he suggested last time I saw him as I am sick of him messing with my meds.
might not be. like I told ninja, I’ve taught myself to gently gnaw on the fleshy bits of my mouth in place of my teeth. when your teeth start to hurt, it’s probably time to stop grinding if you can help it at all.
Chewing on your mouth isn’t a perfect solution either, because you can end up damaging your cheeks and lips. I have permanent scars all along the inside of my mouth. Please learn from my mistakes. My dentist recommended chewing trident to avoid grinding or biting my mouth.
Not sure what you can do. All I know is that the Procyclidine is used for muscle tensions and movements disorders for Parkinson’s, but also drug induced parkinsonism symptoms caused by AP’s side effects.
Is it just your teeth grinding that’s the issue? Do you do pill rolling, have cogwheel rigidity and/or uncontrollable movements, twitches and tremors any where else in your body?
no, everything else checks out fine.
didn’t even answer your question, yes its just the teeth grinding every now and then.
I believe like @Ninjastar mentioned, it could be some mild anxiety. I notice if i drift off into thought or daydream, I start kinda ‘chewing’. I have to consciously remember not to do it
I grind my teeth and have messed up fillings by doing so. I also clench and click my teeth and twist my mouth to the side (frequently enough that I’ve developed a vertical wrinkle on the left side of my chin), but I don’t know how much of that is from the TD.
