I experienced this first hand in 1990 when I was a teen in the adolescent unit.

When I became chronically suicidal I checked myself into a psychiatric unit at my local hospital. All I did was stay in bed all day every day. One doctor told me I was just like a vegetable and why didn’t I do anything. And another there that took us for walks told me I needed A kick in the ass. But fortunately my psychiatrist there was 100% compassionate with me. He even asked me what medicine did I want to take. He knew my situation at home and what I was going through with my parents. He saw me totally animated before I went into this severe chronic depressed suicidal state. I’m really thankful for his compassion on me.

yes, it is horrible for them to be told that or anyone for that matter whether they have mental illness or not it’s not cool and so wrong on many levels

I was labeled borderline intellectual in my records. For a long time, I thought it was a compliment. It really means just above retardation lol. They based it on how I needed instructions to prepare a cup of coffee. Little did the Dr. know that I was delusional and thought I had to follow his instructions to get into the “real” world haha.

Yeah it seems the most expedient way to deal with people, especially young adults, is not the best way. Idk I escaped twice from the hospital and each time received four shots in my rear. I eventually got shipped to the state hospital. Mental hospitals are typically lacking imo.

When I was hospitalized as a young adult, barely outside teenage years, the nurse asked if I had a history of self harm. I showed her my marks and she laughed at me and said that was “barely anything.” She also threatened to throw away my belongings if I didn’t sit down. I was standing quietly next to my chair at the time, not moving or interacting with anyone.

There are a lot of psych workers who should be rotated out to desk duty for a few months. Compassion fatigue is a real, unavoidable part of the job, and I wish it was factored into the way the job was structured. Instead, every time a worker ends up like that, they are individually blamed for not managing their stress well enough, and held up as an example to the newer workers of someone too weak or selfish for the job. Until they too get burnt out and end up as the next example for the even newer workers. There’s a reason the turnover in those places is so high.

That isn’t in any way meant to excuse the abuse these people carry out. People can always choose to leave the job when it gets to be too much. They would have an easier time recognizing when that is, if the culture in those workplaces didn’t lean so heavily on shaming people into denying that they experience compassion fatigue until they hit a breaking point. If there wasn’t such an us vs them mentality creating the illusion of a hard barrier between patient and practitioner. If the workers knew they could seek their own mental health treatment without losing their job or their license.

Me too! To an extreme. My story is most likely too much to share here due to how it could affect fellow mentally ill patients

If I ever ended up in a psych ward again and was abused by staff….firstly I wouldn’t give a ■■■■. And secondly I’d give abuse back.

I didnt read the article but it certainly doesnt seem , right for nurses to say that to teenage psychiatric patients.

Personally, i leave that for my girlfriend to tell me.
