Tardive dyskinesia

my thumb keeps twitching and contracting against the palm of my hand. I don’t know if it’s a worsening of symptoms or a reaction to one of my meds. I’m going to see the pdoc next week but how is she going to know? It’s frustrating because I’m stable on meds and I don’t want to make a change but I know a change is coming, I can feel it. I had a reaction to abilify in the past and I currently take rexulti, I think I remember reading the two are similar, so maybe it would be best to discontinue the rexulti and see if the tardive dyskinesia settles down. I’m on a second ap called saphris, I think it’s doing all the heavy lifting anyway. But I guess I have to see what the pdoc says. Anybody have experience with this situation, td and these meds?

I think Saphris is also possibly the source of the twitching. It is known to cause eps.

Talk to your pdoc about this issue.

Being on multiple APs it can be hard to tell what is doing what.

Your pdoc can adjust your dosages accordingly.

I had a twitching thumb and asked my doctor if it was TD. They said it wasn’t and sure enough it went away. So don’t panic just yet. I’m on 15mg abilify.

well this is more like a contraction that pulls the thumb to the palm and renders it useless for a few seconds. It also just twitches off and on throughout the day. I already have td from taking abilify years ago, it’s just pretty mild. I’m pretty sure this is td, I just don’t know if it’s from the old abilify td or from one of the meds I’m currently taking. How would they know? I really haven’t found too much information on td on the web. Do you know if rexulti is similar to abilify?

never mind I looked it up, it is very similar

Very rarely I get what you desribed about the thumb being pulled towards the palm of my hand. It’s super rare though. But yeah it does happen. I’m not concerned about it though.

Have you been diagnosed with td then ?

I grind my teeth and make involuntary movements with the tongue. Maybe it’s TD

Ask your doctor about these two side effect medications

propranolol for akathisia
benztropine for dystonia

I’ve also had twitching thumb once pulling it to the palm of my hand. It went away and I’ve never had it since.

I was concerned when I got it also. But it’s not come back. I’d put your mind at rest for now. Sometime it can just be a nerve. If it persists talk to doctor but it is not necessarily TD

my thumbs and fingers twitch all the time…it’s not considered tardive dyskenisia though…just nerves in your hands…?

Have you mentioned this to your doctor @Om_Sadasiva?
Involuntary movements of the tongue sounds concerning.
It could very well be Tardive Dyskinesia.
It needs to be treated right away for best results.

I will tell her the day after tomorrow when we will have our appointment.

@Leaf My thumb and fingers twitched before, don’t know if it’s Tardive Dyskinesia in your case.
It’s a pretty common occurrence with AP use.
Bring it up to your doctor.

yes, I have td, I’m seeing the pdoc on the 4th to talk to her about my thumb. I don’t know if it’s related though.
