Swallowing difficulties on Clozapine?

Are they related to clozapine or something else? I recently got off Abilify Maintena (an injectable)

Since upping my risperdal dose I have been choking often when drinking water or when vaping, sometimes even during my sleep. But I would rather have no sz than not choking.

Yes, the former. Disruption of the swallowing reflex is a classic adverse effect of clozapine. It often manifests as saliva on the pillow.

are you new on that medicine.if so you could wait some time to pass.but you should talk with your doctorfirst this because its serious side effects

The only method I know of is to quit the drug. You have to weigh the positives against the negatives and decide if it’s worth taking it. Clozapine does have fewer anti-dopaminergic side effects than other antipsychotics; it is used for psychosis in Parkinson’s disease.

yes its a long time .i think you should change your medicine immediately.talk with your doctor right away

Idk if my doctor lets me stop the drug since its the only antipsychotic im now on

I had trouble swallowing on a medication doc switched it and wasn’t a problem since

I have trouble swallowing a few hours after taking my clozapine, and I also have problems with the overproduction of saliva. I changed from twice a day dosing to just taking it when I go to bed (since I’ll be sleeping, not eating) and using atropine drops to dry my mouth out. Those actions have made it tolerable. So far it’s the only AP that seems to improve me.

Tell your doc about it. It’s an extrapyramidal symptom.

I had the same issue on higher dosage of clozapine. Don’t think there is anything you can do. How have you been doing?
