Have any of you experienced sun sensitivity from your meds? Gotten a rash? How long did it last?
My haldol makes me burn super easily. I’m also on an antibiotic and usually it also makes me burn easily. But I think the combination of the two is causing me to get a horrible itchy rash, even with sunscreen, after only a few minutes in the sun and I have no idea how to deal with it.
I see my PCP later today, but I have a feeling she’ll just tell me to stay out of the sun. Lol
Any other advice? Anyone else experience this from their meds? Please tell me I’m not alone.
I’ve had this sun rash in my hand for like 3 weeks and it’s still super itchy.
Olanzapine made me get sunburned very quickly. What you’re describing sounds like dermatitis, possibly from laundry detergent or insect repellents containing DEET. Avoiding too much sun exposure and eliminating skin irritants might help.
I’ve had a number of drugs that made it easy to get sunburned and suffered greatly as a result when I was exposed to the Sun for a while. They include antipsychotics, blood pressure meds, and possibly others. My worst burns included on my head once with caused a terrible itch and burn which I ended by putting a hat on, a burn on my legs and arms on a day in the 80’s when i wore shorts and short sleeves, and once when I was in the swimming pool when I burned all over. In the pool unfortunately the burn would be temporarily relieved by going under water but the overall effect got worse with time. After a while i started to not even consider outside work when I was interested in employment. I will have to say however that if you look at guys who work outside a lot you may notice they where jeans and jean jackets even on hot days and are covered up well. I guess if I could handle the heat that wouldn’t be bad for me. But the invega I take has a warning for excessive heat and cold. I guess I can’t win for losing.
I used to be super sensitive to the sun and heat when I took zyprexa with risperdal. I would get a rash in the creases of my arms, where my elbows are, on the inside, and it would spread if I got overheated or went out in the sun.
When I quit the zyprexa and just took a higher dose of risperdal, the sun sensitivity lessened and the rash disappeared within a week or two.
Now I’m on invega, which is similar to risperdal, and I’m even less sensitive to heat and the sun, though I don’t stay exposed for long, because of the high UV rays in my area.
You’re definitely not alone. The only suggestion I have is a meds change or adjustment.
Luckily I’ll only be in the antibiotic for another 6ish weeks. I can handle the haldol level of sun sensitivity. At least I can use sunscreen and prevent a burn. But with the antibiotics it didn’t matter of I’m wearing sunscreen or not it didn’t seem. I still get the rash.
I’m on a sun sensitive AP and I live in the Philippines I spend a lot of time out in the sun, and have been getting these rashes on my leg.
I also take lamotrigine as well, so I don’t know if the rashes are from the meds or the sun.
Another side effect I get is from the hot humidity, if I do any exercise like basketball after like 10 minutes my mind will start to hallucinate and everything that is black in my environment tends to come out it’s really frightening but once I go into a cool spot it goes away from as little as 30 minutes and has lasted for up to 2 hours to go away.
