I am starting college for the first time on Monday and I wanted to get some study tips. I have access to one of my class assignments early (general psychology) and I got the textbook. Could the chapters in a book be any longer? I have no idea how I am going to retain all this crap. I watched a video on study habits online and it was pretty helpful but I was wondering if any of you had some tips that actually ‘worked’ for you and you could share them. Thanks.
I always learn better when I have a visual representation of what I am learning. A lot of that comes from doing my own projects to create examples and watching videos on the topic at hand. I find information easier to understand when I am the one who is creating it. However, that might just be me
I write down all my notes instead of just highlighting or typing. The act of writing helps me retain the information better. But every brain is different.
I personally find that writing out notes of the textbook keeps it in my mind. The act of writing seems to stamp it on my memory.
My son (starting Junior year In college) also told me that the actual act of writing notes helps him retain information. I’ll definitely do that.
The number one biggest mistake I always made in college was leaving things until the last minute. I would have a week to do a reading and turn in an assignment and I would procrastinate and procrastinate until it was the day before the assignment was due and then I would have to frantically rush around and scramble to turn in a decent paper. Don’t make this mistake. Arrange your time wisely so you can relax and really think over what needs to be done at your leisure.
Study groups are helpful if you are in a situation where you can join one or form your own. I have never been in one but my sister studied this way a lot when she was getting her degree in nursing school… I think I read somewhere that studying in a group of 3 or 4 people is actually more productive than studying alone and it is very helpful in two aspects because you get to mix work with socializing. i don’t know how practical this would be for you personally but you may want to look into it.
I always did better in the Library. Surrounded by people quietly working seemed to keep me on task.
I don’t know how you can do it good on you man
I haven’t actually done it yet, lol. With me luck.
Good Luck!
They showed a study with babies on TV, but say it works for adults, What the did was act out a short skit with babies repeating the same motions with a puppet, then put 50% of the babies down for a nap, and 50% were kept awake.
Without fail the babies who napped remembered everything while the ones that were kept awake forgot about it. So study then nap, all nighters don’t work.
Interesting. Ya, I heard on the video I watched that breaks are necessary and that continuous study without rest can backfire. Duly noted.
I used to draw flow diagrams using different colours. In exams I. Could see the flow diagram in my minds eye.
