Hey new user here. I was wondering if anyone knows a complete list of the stronger antipsychotics that treat severe schizophrenia.
Thanks

They say in general the stronger meds are respiridone, olanzapine and clozapine. But it varies from person to person. Haldol is very strong.
Risperidone and Haloperidol are strong and are used to to calm down acutely psychotic patients.
If you want something long-term to treat schizophrenia you need to find the best antipsychotic with help from a doctor, and people on here are not allowed to tell anyone what Meds to take.
Thanks for the replies and I’m currently on risperdal 4mg, but it’s doing nothing for my visual and tactile hallucinations.
Clozapine is generally considered the most powerful but requires weekly blood tests at first, and is considered a last resort antipsychotic.
Welcome to the forum. I have nothing to add to what has already been said.
Welcome to the forums! If you’re having trouble finding the right med, I know a few people here have had a DNA test that tells them which meds they would respond best to based on their genetics. Could you ask your doctor about that?
Risperidone 4mg is normally quite effective for hallucinations, but it don’t means that it will work for everyone. Are you on any other medication or drugs that may cause hallucinations.
Generally speaking, the older “typical” antipsychotics are the strongest med’s for treating sz. Some of them are Moban, Stellazine, Haldol, Prolixin, Navane, Mellaril, and, of course, Thorazine. I think most of the typical antipsychotics are derivatives of Thorazine. Then there is Clozapine, which is in a class by itself. I had a kind of novel reaction to Clozapine when they put me on it. The drug totally destroyed my sense of balance. I was in serious danger of doing a nose dive into the carpet when they put me on it. People often react differently to different med’s. I knew one guy who could take any amount of Stellazine, and it would do nothing to him. Very little of that drug will put me flat on my back. Some people tolerate the typical antipsychotics with ease. For other people they are pure hell. I’m one of the people for whom the typical antipsychotics are pure hell.
Any idea why risperdal instead of invega? I’m on invega and was under the impression it was newer, maybe more improved.
I am on an older typical antipsychotic called Chlorpromazine (thorazine) because I don’t get on with the newer antipsychotics. I don’t have any problems with it apart from weight gain, and it totally stop hallucinations. It is similar to Olanzapine (zyprexa) which you may also find helpful.
Not in order.
Risperidone, Clozapine, Olanzapine, Paliperidone,
out of the Atypicals.
Then you have the older Typicals like Haldol.
They are all potent.
There is a NAMI sheet that lists the APs in order of strength and sedation. I’ll try to find it.
I’m in the same boat.
no I don’t use any rec drugs that would cause hallucinations.
Thanks, that would be helpful.
Risperdal Zyprexa and Clozaril are superior to the typicals like haldol and so on. More efficacy for psychosis.
welcome, i’m on Haldol pills and soon switching to the injection which is suppose to be stronger. I agree no one is allowed to recommend meds but can only tell you about their personal experiences but that may just shape your idea of what meds to try. don’t give up on a med too soon but that doesn’t mean suffer for a long time either just listen to your pdoc
i didnt know risperidone was the stronger antipsychotics… i thought it was the weakest one cos of low dose number… does that mean my schizophrenia is severe?
Not necessarily. At the end of the y it is whatever works for you. Respiridone is tried and tested so the docs know it’s properties. Plus it is cheap.
