Stocked up for the next storm wednesday

Ran all the errands, hope it doesn’t blow out the power…we have gas heat though so we are safe.

Eh…I don’t get it. Gas heat should still require some electricity to run. You might be out of luck in that department if your power goes out. Just a warning if you are expecting it to stay on.

My parents have gas heat and they had no heat during a big power outage here about ten years years ago. The blower in your furnace is electric.

I would think the thermostat and circuits which turns on your furnace as well.

Same here. We have a central hot water boiler heat. I think it’s natural gas fired, but I’m not sure as the maintenance guy handles turning on the heat or AC. The thermostat and blower in my apartment are electric though.

no, we just have a wall unit that doesn’t require electricity. we’re safe I promise.

I see. You are lucky then. That setup must be fairly rare.

Our gas fireplace is operated by an electric switch, so… Both of our vehicles have 1000W inverters installed so we have emergency power if desperate enough. Just run a cord inside from an idling auto.

This is untrue, I’ve been through several power outages and had gas heat and unless it has an electric blower it will put out heat

I see. I think that it is true in most cases. We had a power outage without heat. I used to do electrical work and most heating systems require electricity. If you have a setup that allows for this, I’d say you are the exception to the rule.

@Bowens I didn’t know it was rare, around here usually even if you have to turn it on with electric it’ll stay on after. Around here we have outages every other year sometimes several times so maybe that’s why it’s not rare… Oh well

We have a relatively new furnace in this condo. It has an electric thermostat, electric igniter, electric motor for the fan, electronic control board, and an electric power damper. No power, no workee. I’m guessing any gas heating system that works without power is rather primitive.

It might seem primitive but even if I had central heat I would still get one for the simple fact when I was a teenager my mom’s house was the only house that’s heat was working because we had the kind of “primitive” heater. It was during a two week ice storm and no one could get out to fix the electric until a week and a half ish later! We ended up housing about 15 people so they would be okay! My mom had a huge heart (she knew all of these people and most were children) it saved not only my family but several other families as well! It may be primitive but I like it

I did electrical work for over 5 years, was in hundreds, if not thousands of houses and never ran into this kind of system. Maybe it is more common in your area? I have no idea, but it is definitely a rarity in my experience. I think I’m going to do some research. I’m curious about this type of system now.

@Bowens I just asked my mom and she said that all of hers were never turned on by electric and she don’t think that the ones that turn on by electric stay on without electric so my bad, it’s my mistake and I’m sorry! I still like the primitive gas heaters though!

No need to apologize. You’ve piqued my interest anyway.

You are right. Fans or a blower is ran by electricity unless he has radiator heat and the boiler doesn’t need power to ignite.

my wall unit has a place to ignite the burner pilot and that is all it requires to run…easy as that.

Sounds like you picked a smart place to live then.

We use wood heat which equals sore backs and a stuffed nose dryness.
