I’ve been living in supported accommodation for a few years! Atm I’ve got support workers who have a office in a house near mine Mon-Fri 8-4.
I’m kinda scared as I’m also a peer support volunteer and know at least 3 people who have had their own flats and lost them, due to ill health.
The main contributing factor is isolation and not going out regularly, but I’m still scared.
I know I’m going to have to keep on volunteering and I do about 7 hrs a week atm, whilst looking for a part time job doing what they call permitted work, but I’m at this impasse, I’m only well to a point and wonder what the next step will bring.
What I’m looking for in this post is how everyone else stays well living independently and any techniques you use!
Personally I think my housemates are bored of my whistling and the nursery rhymes that I sing to distract myself when I’m not doing anything.
i have lots of techniques but it is hard to describe them all,
the biggest and best imo is routine, getting into a proper routine is a great way to stay active and positive, if you fill your routine with things that you like doing then that will help with the boredom,
i have had my friend sweep help me a lot, i dont think i could have done this without her tbh she has been a rock, if i got behind on something she would be there,
right now i have been spending less time with sweep and i am learning how to cope completely on my own, it is a bit harder but i think i am doing ok, i did the washing clothes and keeping the kitchen tidy, which are the main things for me and i am keeping up with my hygiene as much as i can.
having special things to do helps you want to keep clean a dress nicely like i always like to clean and look good for services and also for my friends (the few i have)
we need a routine or a schedule, i dont write mine down bc i need to improve my memory and some times it is a bit random and off plan but i just go with it and say ‘i think i can fit that in’ even short notice but you need to feel like doing whatever it is.
