Schizophrenia’s etymology is of Greek/Latin origins, and roughly means “split mind” or “to split the mind.” So I want to conduct an experiment.
Take a look at a photo of yourself. Look into one eye, and then into the other. Cover the opposite eye with a thumb if necessary. Does it look as though each eye is somehow conveying a different emotion? I took a picture earlier today and noticed this on myself, and realized that I’ve noticed it in the past as well.
I actually noticed this the other day. My right eye looks depressed or just serious. But my whole right side in general is slightly bigger than my left for some reason.
"Split mind’ does not mean what you might think it means.
The term “Split mind” means a “split from reality”.
The two halves of the brain take on different functions. In most basic, oversimplified terms, one side of the brain deals withe emotions, the other side deals with rational thoughts. From what I gather that is one big part of the difference between men and women functioning. In females their emotional side of the brain is is stronger and they are more feeling oriented, while men’s brains are more analytical inclined. Of course every rule has an exception.
the 6th time I was admitted into the hospital, somebody made the observation about me that “one side of my mouth is evil looking and the other is happy looking”. Now that observation follows me every where I go medically! My doctor has it on his records and when he sent off the notes to the therapeutic farm I went to that observation was included!!! I dunno about my eyes though I think they’re fairly symmetric.
the idea that leftys are more creative then rightys stems from the fact that the right side of our body is controlled more by the left hemisphere of our brain and vice-versa. So it’s a matter of opposites. I often times confuse it myself. There’s also a great deal of intriguement about lower and upper hemispheres of the brain… Although not all leftys are creative, and not all rightys are logical, if you look at a great number of very talented musicians, many of them are leftys. Kurt Kobain, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Eminem, Jim Morrison were all leftys I believe.
Your explanation is oversimplified to the point of being downright incorrect. It sounds nice and tidy on paper, a neatly gift-wrapped package to present, but the human brain is far more complex than this.
Also, I appreciate your use of the word “might.” I wasn’t speaking on what “split mind” meant, only drawing a comparison from its etymology alone.
I strongly believe that studying the eyes/eyesight and relate brain regions in relation to schizophrenia will lead to major scientific breakthrough, if not causes and cures.
@77nick77 Could you link me to a reputable source with info on that interpretation, “a split from reality”? The Greek certainly doesn’t translate that way. Etymology is one of my passions and I’m interested in learning more.
True, but that borders on philosophy. Which, in terms of finding the genuine cause and more effective treatments for schizophrenia, is a severe hindrance. As it’s intended to be in discussions like these, no doubt.
